The authors investigated if focal ablation of astrocytes were sufficient to disrupt the blood-brain barrier in mice. Targeted two-photon chemical apoptotic ablation of astrocytes induced a plasticity response whereby surrounding astrocytes extended processes to cover vascular vacancies.
