Investigators showed that GM-CSF produced by cord blood-derived inflammatory monocytes drove pre-engraftment syndrome pathology (PES), and that monocytes were the main source of IL-6 during PES. They also reported the outcome of a clinical study of tocilizumab in the treatment of steroid-refractory severe PES patients.
