    TOP STORY

Comparative Phenotypic Characterization of Human Cord Blood Monocytes and Placental Macrophages at Term
The expression of surface molecules in cord blood monocytes and placental macrophages was studied using flow cytometry. [Placenta] Abstract

Register for new mouse/rat HSC CFU training course.

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)

Similar Overall Survival Using Sibling, Unrelated Donor and Cord Blood Grafts after Reduced Intensity Conditioning for Older Patients with AML
The authors compared reduced intensity conditioning hematopoietic cell transplantation in 197 consecutive patients 50 years and older with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in complete remission from matched sibling, unrelated donors or umbilical cord blood transplantation. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Mitigation of Lethal Radiation Syndrome in Mice by Intramuscular Injection of 3D Cultured Adherent Human Placental Stromal Cells
C3H/HeN mice were total body irradiated by 7.7 Gy. Twenty four hours and five days after irradiation 2×106 cells from different preparations of human derived 3D expanded adherent placental stromal cells were injected intramuscularly. [PLoS One] Full Article

Prolonged In Vitro Expansion Partially Affects Phenotypic Features and Osteogenic Potential of Ovine Amniotic Fluid-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
The phenotype and osteogenic differentiation potential of ovine amniotic fluid mesenchymal stromal cells (oAFMSCs) were analyzed in relation to in vitro expansion that was carried out for 20 consecutive passages. Expanded oAFMSCs reduced their proliferative activity after 10 passages and partially modified the expression of surface antigens and the intracellular distribution of pluripotency-associated markers (NANOG, SOX2 and TERT) after 20 passages. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Erythropoietin-Stimulated Endothelial Cells Support Erythroid Cell Differentiation of CD34(+) Hematopoietic Progenitors
Endothelial cells provide a unique medium for the proliferation and white lineage differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells. Whether this quality can be exploited to facilitate the differentiation of erythroid precursors is not yet known. Hematopoietic progenitor cells derived from cord blood were cultured for three weeks in erythropoietin-stimulated supernatants with or without cyclosporine A. [Vox Sang] Abstract

Free Iron Catalyzes Oxidative Damage to Hematopoietic Cells/ Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Vitro and Suppresses Hematopoiesis in Iron Overload Patients
Researchers investigated the effect of iron overload on hematopoiesis of the patients and explored the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in iron induced oxidative damage in hematopoietic cells and microenvironment in vitro. In vitro, they first established an iron overload model of bone marrow mononuclear cells and umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells. ROS level, cell cycle and apoptosis were measured by FACS. [Eur J Haematol] Abstract

Fibromodulin Promoted In Vitro and In Vivo Angiogenesis
The authors investigated the effects of fibromodulin (FMOD) on angiogenesis, which is an important event in wound healing as well as embryonic development and tumorigenesis. They found that FMOD accelerated human umbilical vein endothelial HUVEC-CS cell adhesion, spreading, actin stress fiber formation, and eventually tube-like structure network establishment in vitro. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Differential Biodistribution of Intravenously Administered Endothelial Progenitor and Cytotoxic T-Cells in Rat Bearing Orthotopic Human Glioma
Scientists evaluated the dynamic biodistribution of systemic injected labeled cells [human cord blood derived endothelial progenitor cells and cytotoxic T-cells] in rat glioma model with in vivo single-photon emission computed tomography imaging. [BMC Med Imaging] Abstract | Full Article

    REVIEWS
Heterogeneity in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Populations: Implications for Transplantation
Transplantation of hematopoietic cells is now a well established clinical procedure, although optimal outcomes are not always obtained. The authors review recent findings that extend the understanding of these cells and their regulation, and implications for the ex vivo expansion of these cells. [Curr Opin Hematol] Abstract

    INDUSTRY NEWS

LifeSouth Reaches a Milestone with FDA License
A journey that began in Gainesville, Florida more than 15 years ago, that’s allowed newborn babies to become lifesavers, reached a milestone, when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified LifeSouth that its license was approved for cord blood manufacturing. Scotland Continues to Forge Ahead in Stem Cell Research
Scotland’s standing as Europe’s largest and most highly regarded stem cell research community has been reaffirmed recently by announcements of funding from the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) and the British Heart Foundation to the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine based at the Edinburgh BioQuarter. As part of a major $25 million boost for UK regenerative medicine, the Edinburgh center will play a key role in the development of new therapies. [PR Newswire Association LLC] Press Release
