Dynamic MicroRNA Profiles of Hepatic Differentiated Human Umbilical Cord Lining-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists aimed to identify microRNAs involved in the hepatic differentiation of human umbilical cord lining-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

Human Interferon-Alpha Increases the Cytotoxic Effect of CD56+ Cord Blood-Derived Cytokine-Induced Killer Cells on Human B-Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Cell Lines
Researchers investigated the possibility of combining adoptive immunotherapy with cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells and human interferon-alpha (hIFN-a) in order to potentiate the cytotoxicity of CIK cells against B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Cord blood- derived CIK cells were differentiated, stimulated with phosphate-buffered saline or hIFN-a, and tested for cytotoxic activity. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Correlation of Infused CD3+CD8+ Cells on Single-Donor Dominance after Double Unit Cord Blood Transplantation
Data indicated that a greater total CD3+/kg cell dose and in particular naïve CD3+CD8+ T-cells, may play an important role in determining single donor dominance after double cord blood transplantation. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Development of a New Humanized Mouse Model to Study Acute Inflammatory Arthritis
One to two-day old irradiated NOD-scid IL2rgammanull (NSG) mice were reconstituted with human CD34+ cord blood stem cells. Arthritis was induced by injecting complete Freund’s adjuvant into knee or ankle joints. [J Transl Med] Abstract

Notch Signals Contribute to Preserve the Multipotentiality of Human CD34+CD38-CD45RA-CD90+ Hematopoietic Progenitors by Maintaining T Cell Lineage Differentiation Potential
Researchers identified cord blood CD34+CD38-CD45RA-CD90+ cells as one of the earliest targets of Notch in human hematopoiesis. Upon Notch activation CD34+CD38- cells are blocked in their differentiation at the CD34+CD38-CD45RA-CD90+ stage. Notch signaling is required before lymphoid commitment to preserve T-cell potential of CD34+CD38-CD45RA-CD90+ cells. [Exp Hematol] Abstract

Co-Culture with Sertoli Cells Promotes Proliferation and Migration of Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists isolated human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) from human cords and Sertoli cells from mouse testes, and co-cultured them using a Transwell system. Findings indicated that Sertoli cells boost UCMSC proliferation and migration potential. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Maintenance and Characterization of Multipotent Mesenchymal Stem Cells Isolated from Canine Umbilical Cord Matrix by Collagenase Digestion
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were successfully isolated from canine umbilical cord matrix by collagenase digestion and further characterized for multipotent properties associated with MSCs. [Res Vet Sci] Abstract

Expression of P16 Cell Cycle Inhibitor in Human Cord Blood CD34+ Expanded Cells following Co-Culture with Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
mRNA expression and promoter methylation status of p16 were evaluated during cord blood hematopoietic stem cell ex vivo expansion using cytokines and a co-culture system with mesenchymal stem cells feeder layer. [Hematology] Abstract

Unrelated Cord Blood Transplantation for Patients with Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma: Experience at a Single Institute
Researchers report the results of unrelated cord blood transplantation for patients with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma conducted in a single institute. [Int J Hematol] Abstract

Stem Cells for Reprogramming: Could hUMSCs Be a Better Choice?
Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUMSC) are primitive multipotent cells capable of differentiating into cells of different lineages. hUMSC can be a great source for cell and transplantation therapy. [Cytotechnology] Abstract
