Bone Progenitor Dysfunction Induces Myelodysplasia and Secondary Leukemia
By examining how mesenchymal osteolineage cells modulate hematopoiesis, researchers show that deletion of Dicer1 specifically in mouse osteoprogenitors, but not in mature osteoblasts, disrupts the integrity of hematopoiesis. [Nature]

Targeting Cell Pathway May Prevent Relapse of Leukemia
Researchers show that leukemia stem cells cannot thrive without a particular cell pathway, known as the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway, suggesting that targeting this pathway may prevent the growth and development of acute myelogenous leukemia. CURRENT PUBLICATIONS

The Wnt/Beta-Catenin Pathway is Required for the Development of Leukemia Stem Cells in Acute Myelogenous Leukemia
Because the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway is normally active in hematopoietic stem cells but not in granulocyte-macrophage progenitors, these results suggest that reactivation of beta-catenin signaling is required for the transformation of progenitor cells by certain oncogenes. [Science]

    Long-Term Study of Indolent Adult T-Cell Leukemia-Lymphoma
The prognosis of indolent adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) in this study was poorer than expected. These findings suggest that even “indolent” ATL patients should be carefully observed in clinical practice. [Blood]

Cytotherapy with Naive Rat Umbilical Cord Matrix Stem Cells Significantly Attenuates Growth of Murine Pancreatic Cancer Cells and Increases Survival in Syngeneic Mice
Results indicate that naive rat umbilical cord matrix-derived stem cells alone remarkably attenuate the growth of pancreatic carcinoma cells in vitro and in a mouse peritoneal model. [Cytotherapy]

Hypoxia Responsive Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Blood are Effective for Bone Repair
Researchers report that mesenchymal stem cells can be separated into two subpopulations based on aldehyde dehydrogenase activity. [Stem Cells Dev]

Isolation and Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Bovine Umbilical Cord Blood
In this study, the cells with spindle morphology from seven of nine bovine umbilical cord blood samples were isolated and cultured. These mesenchymal stromal cells were successfully differentiated to osteocytes, chondrocytes and adipocytes. [Reprod Domest Anim]

In Vitro Culture of Keratinocytes from Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stem Cells: The Saigonese Culture
This study was designed to investigate whether keratinocytes could be obtained directly from human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. [Cell Tissue Bank]
