    TOP STORY

Hes1 Is a Critical but Context-Dependent Mediator of Canonical Notch Signaling in Lymphocyte Development and Transformation  ShareThis
Researchers showed here that conditional inactivation of Hes1 , a well-characterized Notch target gene, in adult murine bone marrow cells severely impaired T cell development without affecting other Notch-dependent hematopoietic lineages such as marginal zone B cells. [Immunity]

    SCIENCE NEWS

Journal of Experimental Medicine Publishes New Dynavax Findings on the Role of TLRS in Cutaneous Lupus
Dynavax Technologies Corporation reported new data that suggests an important role of the key innate immune receptors TLR7 and TLR9 in cutaneous lupus and related skin conditions. [Press release from the Dynavax Technologies Corporation discussing online prepublication in the Journal of Experimental Medicine]

Mayo Researchers Find Drug-Resistant HIV Patients With Unimpaired Immune Cells
Researchers have shown why, in a minority of HIV patients, immune function improves despite a lack of response to standard anti-retroviral treatment. In these cases, researchers say, the virus has lost its ability to kill immune cells. [Press release from the Mayo Clinic discussing online prepublication in PLoS Pathogens]

Adipose Tissue Produces Cells Involved in Immune Response
Researchers isolated a population of hematopoietic stem cells in adipose tissue capable of differentiating into mast cells. [Press release from PhysOrg discussing online prepublication in Stem Cells]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Autoimmune Skin Inflammation is Dependent on Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Activation by Nucleic Acids via TLR7 and TLR9
Recognition of endogenous DNA and RNA by cells expressing TLR7 and TLR9 is an important contributor to the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus and has been suggested to contribute to cutaneous lupus and to a group of related inflammatory skin diseases termed interface dermatitis. Researchers have developed a mouse model of TLR7- and TLR9-dependent skin inflammation using tape stripping. [J Exp Med]

IL-27 Supports Germinal Center Function by Enhancing IL-21 Production and the Function of T Follicular Helper Cells
Researchers show that the heterodimeric cytokine IL-27 is critical for the function of T follicular helper cells and for normal and pathogenic germinal center responses. [J Exp Med]

Blockade of Osteopontin Reduces Alloreactive CD8+ T Cell-Mediated Graft-Versus-Host Disease
This study demonstrates for the first time, the critical effect of osteopontin (OPN) in the initiation and persistence of CD8+ T cell-mediated graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and validates OPN as a potential target in GVHD prevention. [Blood]

Inflammation-Induced Tumorigenesis in the Colon is Regulated by Caspase-1 and NLRC4
Using the azoxymethane and dextran sodium sulfate colitis-associated colorectal cancer model, researchers show that caspase-1-deficient (Casp1-/-) mice have enhanced tumor formation. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA]

Adipose Tissue as a Dedicated Reservoir of Functional Mast Cell Progenitors
In this study, researchers asked whether mast cells present in mice adipose tissue could derive from hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells identified in the tissue. [Stem Cells]

Patients with Discordant Responses to Antiretroviral Therapy Have Impaired Killing of HIV-Infected T Cells
Researchers have studied the circumstance of HIV-infected patients in whom antiretroviral therapy results in immunologic benefit, despite virologic failure. [PLoS Pathog]

Immune Response Modifiers from 3M Available for the Pharmaceutical Industry
3M announces the availability of immune response modifier compounds for nonvaccine use in the pharmaceutical industry. The toll-like receptor (TLR) compounds, that activate through TLR7 and TLR8, show promise for the treatment of conditions including cancer, dermatologic diseases and atopic diseases, such as allergy and asthma.
