PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)JAK2-Binding Long Noncoding RNA Promotes Breast Cancer Brain Metastasis LncRNA associated with breast cancer brain metastases (Lnc-BM) increased JAK2 kinase activity to mediate oncostatin M– and IL-6–triggered STAT3 phosphorylation. In breast cancer cells, Lnc-BM promoted STAT3-dependent expression of ICAM1 and CCL2, which mediated vascular co-option and recruitment of macrophages in the brain, respectively. [J Clin Invest] Full Article Hit-and-Run Epigenetic Editing Prevents Senescence Entry in Primary Breast Cells from Healthy Donors Scientists showed simultaneous de novo DNA methylation of genes commonly methylated in cancer, CDKN2A, RASSF1, HIC1 and PTEN in primary breast cells isolated from healthy human breast tissue. [Nat Commun] Full Article Pyk2 and FAK Differentially Regulate Invadopodia Formation and Function in Breast Cancer Cells The authors identify proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (Pyk2) as a unique mediator of invadopodium formation and function and also provide a novel insight into the mechanisms by which Pyk2 mediates tumor cell invasion. [J Cell Biol] Abstract MTA1 Is a Novel Regulator of Autophagy That Induces Tamoxifen Resistance in Breast Cancer Cells Investigators demonstrated that metastasis-associated 1 (MTA1) induces AMPK activation and subsequent autophagy that could contribute to tamoxifen resistance in breast cancer. [Autophagy] Abstract In vitro, the MCF7 breast cancer cell line and tamoxifen-resistant MCF7 cells were studied to track the raptor signaling changes upon resistance, and raptor localization in ERα-positive cell lines was compared with that in ERα-negative cell lines. [Breast Cancer Res Treat] Full Article Scientists report that miR-361-5p was down-regulated in breast cancer tissue compared with normal breast tissue and the expression of miR-361-5p was positively associated with prognosis in breast cancer patients. Functional studies showed that overexpression of miR-361-5p suppressed the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of breast cancer cells both in vivo and in vitro. [J Exp Clin Cancer Res] Full Article Researchers performed a genome-wide expression analysis in miR-7-transfected MCF-10A breast cell line to explore the upstream regulators of miR-7. MiR-7 was upregulated in MCF-10A cells by hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and subsequently downregulated upon treatment with siRNA against HGF. [Sci Rep] Full Article The authors report that ETS variant 1 (ETV1) is a significant oncogene in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) tumourigenesis. Consequently, investigating the critical regulatory microRNAs of ETV1 may be beneficial for TNBC targeted therapy. [BMC Cancer] Full Article Investigators found that pterostilbene inhibits the cellular proliferation of MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells in both a time- and dose-dependent manner, without significant toxicity to the MCF10A control cells. cMyc, a proposed target of the pterostilbene-mediated inhibition of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), was down-regulated both transcriptionally and posttranscriptionally after treatment. REVIEWSThe authors present a collection of data that can delineate the missing links of molecular signatures between aging and breast cancer. [Exp Mol Med] Full Article Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Stem Cells, and African Ancestry Researchers summarize the existing literature regarding triple-negative breast cancers and stem cells as they pertain to the breast cancer burden of African ancestry populations. Additional research related to variation in somatic tumor genomics between African American and Caucasian American is also summarized. INDUSTRY NEWSAstraZeneca announced that the FDA has approved a new indication for FASLODEX®, expanding the indication to include use with abemaciclib, a CDK4/6 inhibitor, for the treatment of hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer in women with disease progression after endocrine therapy. [AstraZeneca] Press Release The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended palbociclib and ribociclib for routine funding after the companies lowered the prices and gave more evidence for their effectiveness. POLICY NEWSAfrican Scientists Get Their Own Open-Access Publishing Platform Africa’s academy of science has announced that it will launch an open-access publishing platform — the first of its kind aimed exclusively at scientists on the continent. [Nature News] Editorial Graduate Students Face Alarming Tax Hike The last thing that graduate students need is a tax hike. But that is what many would face under a clause in the federal-tax-reform bill passed by the US House of Representatives. It will need to be reconciled with the Senate’s tax-reform bill (which retains many existing student tax benefits), and signed by the president. [Nature News] Editorial
