TOP STORYEighty-eight subjects with ischemic cardiomyopathy received treatment with mesenchymal stem cell (MSC), placebo, or bone marrow mononuclear cells. Heart rate variability and ventricular ectopy (VE) were evaluated over 12 months. VE did not change in any group following MSC implantation. [Stem Cells] Full Article

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)IN VITROScientists found that myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) cells proliferated to a greater extent on MDS-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) compared to normal MSCs. Matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1), which was downregulated in MDS-MSCs, was identified as an inhibitory factor of MDS cell proliferation, given that treatment with an MMP1 inhibitor or knock-down of MMP1 in normal MSCs resulted in increased MDS cell proliferation. [Sci Rep] Full Article Researchers found that the relaxation of cytoskeleton tension of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in 3D culture was critically associated with the expressional up-regulation of Nanog. Cultured in spheroids, MSCs showed decreased integrin-based cell–matrix adhesion but increased cadherin-based cell–cell interaction. [J Cell Mol Med] Full Article The osteogenic differentiation of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells was evaluated, which were cultured on aligned/random electrospun fiber mats materials under mechanical tension intervention. Scanning electron microscope and immune-fluorescent staining were used to directly observe the polarity changing of cellular morphology and cytoskeleton. [Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces] Abstract miR-483 Targets SMAD4 to Suppress Chondrogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells To test the function of microRNA (miR)-483 during chondrogenesis, lentiviral strategies were used to overexpress miR-483 during in vitro chondrogenesis of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [J Orthop Res] Abstract The authors investigated the effects of using adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells transfected with an episomal plasmid encoding fibroblast growth factor 1 in providing the microenvironment required for angiogenic proliferation. [DNA Cell Biol] Abstract IN VIVOHistological and micro-CT results showed that poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) scaffolds seeded with ESW-treated BMSCs produced more bone-like tissue with commitment to the osteogenic lineage when subcutaneously implanted in vivo, as compared to control group. [Sci Rep] Full Article Researchers hypothesized that parathyroid hormone (PTH) therapy would enhance mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) homing and differentiation, ultimately leading to bone formation that would bridge rib fractures. The combination of human MSCs and a clinically relevant PTH dose was studied using immunosuppressed rats. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article Investigators compared the effectiveness of exosomes secreted by synovial membrane mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and exosomes secreted by induced pluripotent stem cell-derived MSCs on the treatment of osteoarthritis. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article Scientists report the results of 46 patients treated with mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) infusion as salvage therapy for steroid-refractory acute GvHD III/IV. Patients received a median cumulative dose of MSCs of 6.81 × 106/kg in a median of 3 infusions. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

REVIEWSMagnetic Targeting as a Strategy to Enhance Therapeutic Effects of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells The authors discuss the magnetic targeting technique, its principles, and the materials most commonly used; they also discuss its potential for mesenchymal stromal cell enhancement, and safety concerns that should be addressed before it can be applied in clinical practice. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article Scientists review and provide an integrated view on the role of mitochondria in mesenchymal stem cell differentiation. [Protein Cell] Full Article The authors address the changes of various epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and micro-RNAs during chondrogenic and adipogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. [Biomed Pharmacother] Abstract Visit our reviews page to see a complete list of reviews in the mesenchymal cell research field.

POLICY NEWSU.K. Scientists Prepare for Impending Break with European Union For months after the United Kingdom (U.K.) voted last June to leave the European Union (EU), many British scientists clung to hopes of a “soft Brexit,” which would not cut them off from EU funding and collaborators. But Prime Minister Theresa May, who is expected to trigger the two-year process of exiting the European Union, has signaled the break will be sharp. U.K. researchers are now facing up to the prospect that they won’t be able to apply for EU funding or easily recruit students and colleagues from the rest of Europe. [ScienceInsider] Editorial Canada’s New Genetic Privacy Law Is Causing Huge Headaches for Justin Trudeau A vote in Canada’s Parliament to approve a genetic privacy bill is creating a self-inflicted political headache for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government—and could result in a relatively rare and unusual court case. [ScienceInsider] Editorial Physician with Drug-Industry Ties Is Trump’s FDA Pick President Donald Trump has nominated Scott Gottlieb — a conservative pundit, physician and venture capitalist — to head the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
