    TOP STORY
Targeting Transcriptional Addictions in Small Cell Lung Cancer with a Covalent CDK7 Inhibitor
Using a high-throughput cellular screen of a diverse chemical library, scientists observed that small cell lung cancer is sensitive to transcription-targeting drugs, in particular to THZ1, a recently identified covalent inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinase 7. [Cancer Cell] Abstract
Video Protocol: Mucociliary Differentiation of Primary Bronchial Epithelial Cells

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Hippo/Yap Signaling Controls Epithelial Progenitor Cell Proliferation and Differentiation in the Embryonic and Adult Lung
Following airway injury, Yap was dynamically regulated in regenerating airway epithelial cells. To determine the role of Hippo signaling in the lung, the mammalian Hippo kinases, Mst1 and Mst2, were deleted in epithelial cells of the embryonic and mature mouse lung. Mst1/2 deletion in the fetal lung enhanced proliferation and inhibited sacculation and epithelial cell differentiation. [J Mol Cell Biol] Abstract

Dendrimer Nanocarriers for Transport Modulation across Models of the Pulmonary Epithelium
Researchers aimed to determine the effect of PEGylation on the interaction of poly(amidoamine) dendrimer nanocarriers with in vitro and in vivo models of the pulmonary epithelium. [Mol Pharm] Abstract

The Tyrosine Kinase BceF and the Phosphotyrosine Phosphatase BceD of Burkholderia contaminans Are Required for Efficient Invasion and Epithelial Disruption of a Cystic Fibrosis Lung Epithelial Cell Line
The insertion mutants bceD::Tp and bceF::Tp showed similar attenuation of adhesion and invasion of the cystic fibrosis lung epithelial cell line CFBE41o- when compared to the parental strain B. contaminans IST408. [Infect Immun] Abstract

Cigarette Smoke Induces uPAR In Vivo and Isoforms Selectively Contribute to Bronchial Epithelial Phenotype
Researchers aimed to determine the effect of cigarette smoke on soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) isoforms, its regulatory pathway and the resultant effect on bronchial epithelial cell function. They identified a positive association between cigarette pack/years and uPAR expression in the airway bronchial epithelium of biopsies from asthma patients. [Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol] Abstract

Hyperosmolarity Invokes Distinct Anti-Inflammatory Mechanisms in Pulmonary Epithelial Cells: Evidence from Signaling and Transcription Layers
The role and mechanism of hypertonic saline inhibition was explored in the TNFα and IL-1β stimulation of pulmonary epithelial cells. Hyperosmolar media inhibited the production of select cytokines stimulated by TNFα and IL-1β at the level of mRNA translation, synthesis and release. [PLoS One] Full Article

Arl4c Expression in Colorectal and Lung Cancers Promotes Tumorigenesis and May Represent a Novel Therapeutic Target
Inhibition of Wnt/β-catenin or Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling reduced ADP-ribosylation factor-like 4c (Arl4c) mRNA levels in HCT116 colorectal cancer cells and A549 lung cancer cells. [Oncogene] Abstract

mir-660 Is Downregulated in Lung Cancer Patients and Its Replacement Inhibits Lung Tumorigenesis by Targeting MDM2-p53 Interaction
Transient and stable overexpression of microRNA (mir)-660 using miRNA mimics reduced migration, invasion, and proliferation properties and increased apoptosis in p53 wild-type lung cancer cells. [Cell Death Dis]

Activation of Type II Cells into Regenerative Sca-1+ Cells During Alveolar Repair
Using lineage-tracing analyses in the mouse model of Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced lung injury, scientists identified a population of Sca-1-expressing type II cells with progenitor cell properties that mediate alveolar repair. These cells were shown to be distinct from previously reported Sca-1-expressing bronchio alveolar stem cells. [Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol] Abstract

Staurosporine Analogs Promote Distinct Patterns of Process Outgrowth and Polyploidy in Small Cell Lung Carcinoma Cells
Scientists have recently shown that staurosporine mediates the conversion of small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) cells into a neuron-like process-bearing phenotype. Here, they have extended these studies to the staurosporine analogs K252a, lestaurtinib, PKC412, stauprimide, and UCN-01 and analyzed their influence on process extension, cell cycle distribution, and induction of polyploidy in four SCLC cell lines. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

    Stem Cells for Respiratory Failure
The authors critically reviewed the large body of clinical and experimental work performed with respect to the use of stem/progenitor cells in respiratory failure, and discussed current challenges and future directions. [Curr Opin Crit Care] Abstract
