    MicroRNA-33a Inhibits Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition and Metastasis and Could Be a Prognostic Marker in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
    The authors found that microRNA (miR)-33a, an intronic miRNA located within the sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 gene, is expressed at low levels in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer cells and is inversely correlated with Twist1 expression. [Sci Rep] Full Article

    Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3β Modulation of Glucocorticoid Responsiveness in COPD
    The authors studied levels of p-GSK3β-ser9, a marker of GSK3β inactivation, in lung sections and cultured monocytes and bronchial epithelial cells of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, control smokers and non-smokers. They observed increased levels of p-GSK3β-ser9 in monocytes, alveolar macrophages and bronchial epithelial cells from COPD patients and control smokers compared to non-smokers.     WNT/β-Catenin Signaling Regulates Cigarette Smoke-Induced Airway Inflammation via the PPARδ/p38 Pathway
    Scientists investigated the role of WNT/β-catenin signaling in cigarette smoke-related airway inflammation using patient lung tissues, human bronchial epithelial cells, and mouse models. [Lab Invest] Abstract

    Nobiletin Stimulates Chloride Secretion in Human Bronchial Epithelia via a cAMP/PKA-Dependent Pathway
    Researchers examined the effects of nobiletin on basal short-circuit current in a human bronchial epithelial cell line, and characterized the signal transduction pathways that allowed nobiletin to regulate electrolyte transport. [Cell Physiol Biochem] Abstract

    Verproside Inhibits TNF-α-Induced MUC5AC Expression through Suppression of the TNF-α/NF-κB Pathway in Human Airway Epithelial Cells
    Scientists found that verproside significantly reduces the expression levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-induced MUC5AC mRNA and protein by inhibiting both nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) transcriptional activity and the phosphorylation of its upstream effectors such as IκB kinaseβ, IκBα, and TGF-β-activated kinase 1 in NCI-H292 cells.     Retinoic Acid-Related Orphan Receptor C Isoform 2 Expression and Its Prognostic Significance for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
    The authors analyzed the expression of retinoic acid-related orphan receptor C isoform 2 (RORC2) and its participation in tumor progression in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). RORC2 expression in NSCLC cell lines was examined by qRT-PCR, Western blotting and flow cytometry. The effects of inhibiting RORC2 activity on the proliferation of NSCLC cells were evaluated.     MicroRNA-181a Regulates Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition by Targeting PTEN in Drug-Resistant Lung Adenocarcinoma Cells
    Paclitaxel- and cisplatin-resistant A549 lung carcinoma cell derivatives were developed by long-term serial culture. To identify novel regulators of epithelial-mesenchymal transition in A549 cells, differentially expressed miRNAs in drug-resistant cells were identified by microarray analysis.     Up-Regulation of miR-452 Inhibits Metastasis of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer by Regulating BMI1
    Relatively lower microRNA (miR)-452 and higher BMI1 expression levels were confirmed to be associated with advanced tumor stage and more extent of lymph nodes metastasis. In vitro, down-regulated miR-452 enhanced cell invasion capability. [Cell Physiol Biochem] Abstract

    Promoting Roles of the Secreted Frizzled-Related Protein 2 as a Wnt Agonist in Lung Cancer Cells
    Scientists employed the secreted frizzled-related protein 2 (SFRP2)-overexpressing plasmid and siRNA to transfect A549 and 95-D cells, respectively. Through MTT assays, they found that SFRP2 knockdown inhibited cell proliferation, and halted the 95-D cells in G1 phase of the cell cycle by downregulation of CCND1 and CDK4, indicating that SFRP2 has the ability of promoting lung cancer cell proliferation.
