TOP STORYThe authors discovered a pivotal role for Mfsd2a in the pathogenesis of Zika virus (ZIKV). ZIKV disrupted major facilitator superfamily domain-containing protein 2 (Mfsd2a) both in cultured primary human brain microvascular endothelial cells and in the neonatal mouse brain. ZIKV envelope protein specifically interacted with Mfsd2a and promoted Mfsd2a polyubiquitination for proteasome-dependent degradation. [Sci Adv] Full Article | |

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)EPLIN-α expression was increased in growing and migrating endothelial cells, was targeted to membrane protrusions, and terminated their growth via interaction with the Arp2/3 complex. [Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract The triple-negative breast cancer cells MDA-MB231 showed a high pro-angiogenetic potential on tube formation of endothelial HUVEC cells. The induced endothelial expression of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) was efficiently addressed by radiolabeled PSMA-specific ligands. [Breast Cancer Res] Full Article Investigators report that in addition to endothelial dysfunction, diseased endothelial cells were found to be pro-atherogenic and pro-inflammation due to high levels of ROS and Ox-LDLs, and high basal expressions of VCAM-1, in particular isoform b, respectively. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article Pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) and adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) with or without autophagy inhibition were cocultured without intercellular contact, and the microvascular barrier function was assessed after ipopolysaccharide treatment. ADSC paracrine function was evaluated by detecting essential growth factors for endothelial cells. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article In HUVECs, polydatin (PD) alleviated LPS-induced F-actin rearrangement, cadherin-catenin complex dissociation and endothelial hyperpermeability, whereas 3-TYP or SIRT3 siRNA attenuated the protective effects of PD. [Lab Invest] Abstract Researchers investigated VEGF- and placental growth factor (PlGF)- related signaling pathways and their roles in cultured human microvascular retinal endothelial cells under high glucose conditions. [Sci Rep] Full Article Self-Assembly, Buckling and Density-Invariant Growth of Three-Dimensional Vascular Networks The authors studied this self-assembling process of blood vessels in three dimensions through a set of simple rules that align intercellular apical-basal and planar cell polarity. They demonstrate that a fully connected network of tubes emerges above a critical initial density of cells. [J R Soc Interface] Abstract Immune Complexes Impaired Glomerular Endothelial Cell Functions in Lupus Nephritis Investigators used heat-aggregated gamma globulin (HAGG) to simulate immune complexes and investigated their effects on glomerular endothelial cell (GEC) functions. Their results revealed that HAGG impaired different aspect of the GEC functions. INDUSTRY NEWSUniversity Hospitals Designs the Cardiovascular Center of the Future Leaders within University Hospitals and the Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute had a vision to provide the most advanced, efficient and cost-effective medical care to patients with heart and vascular disease. The opening of the new Center for Advanced Heart and Vascular Care brings that vision to life. [Scranton Gillette Communications] Press Release Adverum Biotechnologies, Inc. announced that the first patient was dosed in the third cohort of the ongoing OPTIC Phase I clinical trial for ADVM-022 for the treatment of neovascular or “wet” age-related macular degeneration. POLICY NEWSUCL to Phase Out Single-Use Plastics, Including Pipette Tips University College London made a series of pledges to cut down on plastic waste, help mitigate climate change, and make its research and teaching facilities more environmentally sustainable. [The Scientist] Editorial Some of NIH’s Chimpanzees Will Not Retire to a Sanctuary as Planned The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) will not be retiring all of its chimpanzees to a sanctuary, as it originally pledged to do, agency head Francis Collins announced today. Nearly four dozen chimps at a biomedical primate facility in New Mexico will remain there because they are too old and sick to move, he said, although scientific studies of them have ended. [ScienceInsider] Editorial Argentine Scientists Rally Behind Favorite in Sunday’s Presidential Election Thousands of Argentine scientists are hoping the man expected to be the country’s next president will reverse deep cuts to research imposed by the conservative government of President Mauricio Macri.
