SCIENCE NEWS Study: Fish-Oil Supplements May Cut Breast-Cancer Risk Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center surveyed more than 35,000 postmenopausal women in Western Washington and found that those who took omega-3 fish-oil supplements had a 32 percent lower incidence of breast cancer. [Press release from Seattle Times discussing advanced online publication in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention] Study Reports on Cleaning Products, Beliefs About Breast Cancer, and Breast Cancer Risk Women who reported the highest combined cleaning product use had a doubled risk of breast cancer compared to those with the lowest reported use. [Press release from Silent Spring Institute discussing online publication in Environmental Health] Studies Gauge Techniques for Measuring Breast Density – a Predictor of Cancer Two new studies announced this week have tested three different methods for accurately measuring breast density , the relative portion of tissue to fat in a woman’s breasts and a strong indicator of breast cancer risk. CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal) LABORATORY RESEARCH Reprogramming Human Cancer Cells in the Mouse Mammary Gland Here, researchers report that human embryonal carcinoma cells proliferate and produce differentiated mammary epithelial cell progeny when mixed with mouse mammary epithelial cells and inoculated into the epithelium-free mammary fat pads of athymic nude mice. [Cancer Res] 6-Thioguanine Selectively Kills BRCA2-Defective Tumors and Overcomes PARP Inhibitor Resistance The data show that 6-thioguanine(6TG) efficiently kills BRCA2-defective tumors and suggest that 6TG may be effective in the treatment of advanced tumors that have developed resistance to poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors or platinum-based chemotherapy. [Cancer Res] Janus Kinase 2 is Required for the Initiation but Not Maintenance of Prolactin-Induced Mammary Cancer To assess the importance of Janus kinase 2 (Jak2)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 signaling during mammary cancer initiation and progression, researchers generated a prolactin receptor-induced mammary cancer model that allows the functional ablation of the Jak2 gene in the mammary epithelium before and after neoplastic transformation. [Oncogene] Post-Transcriptional Mechanisms Contribute to the Suppression of the ErbB3 Negative Regulator Protein Nrdp1 in Mammary Tumors Here, researchers demonstrate that transgenic expression of Nrdp1 cDNA in the mouse mammary gland is not sufficient to suppress elevated ErbB3 levels or tumor initiation and growth in ErbB2 transgenic mice. [J Biol Chem] Dissecting the Transcriptional Networks Underlying Breast Cancer: NR4A1 Reduces the Migration of Normal and Breast Cancer Cell Lines The purpose of the study was to identify the role of NR4A1 in normal mammary epithelial and breast cancer cell biology. [Breast Cancer Res] A Gene on the HER2 Amplicon, C35, is an Oncogene in Breast Cancer Whose Actions are Prevented by Inhibition of Syk C35 functions as an oncogene in breast cancer cell lines. Drug targeting of C35 or Syk kinase might be helpful in treating a subset of patients with HER2-amplified breast cancers. [Br J Cancer] miR-214 Regulates Lactoferrin Expression and Pro-Apoptotic Function in Mammary Epithelial Cells In this study, researchers showed that lactoferrin gene expression and function are directly targeted by miR-214 in HC11 and MCF7 cells. [J Nutr] Negative Regulation of UCP2 by TGF(Beta) Signaling Characterizes Low and Intermediate-Grade Primary Breast Cancer Through mechanistic analyses, researchers show a synergistic link between UCP2 and established cellular pathways in conferring grade-associated functional phenotypes. [Cell Death & Disease] CLINICAL RESEARCH Breast Cancer Risk by Breast Density, Menopause, and Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy Use Researchers determined whether the association between breast density and breast cancer risk and cancer severity differs according to menopausal status and postmenopausal hormone therapy use. [J Clin Oncol] Specialty Supplements and Breast Cancer Risk in the VITamins And Lifestyle (VITAL) Cohort Current use of fish oil was associated with reduced risk of breast cancer. [Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev] Self-Reported Chemicals Exposure, Beliefs About Disease Causation, and Risk of Breast Cancer in the Cape Cod Breast Cancer and Environment Study: a Case-Control Study This population-based case-control study investigated whether use of household cleaners and pesticides increases breast cancer risk.
