β Cell Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1α Is Required for the Prevention of Type 1 Diabetes

Scientists demonstrated that deletion of the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor-1α from β cells increased the susceptibility of non-obese diabetic mice to environmentally triggered type 1 diabetes from coxsackieviruses and the β cell toxin streptozotocin. STAT3 Dictates β-Cell Apoptosis by Modulating PTEN in Streptozocin-Induced Hyperglycemia

Researchers observed that activation of STAT3 was intensely and specifically inhibited in β-cells under hyperglycemic conditions. By knocking out STAT3 specifically in mouse β-cells, they found that the loss of STAT3 sensitized mice to three low doses of STZ stimulation resulting in hyperglycemia. [Cell Death Differ] Abstract

In pancreatic tissues, p-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 was strongly expressed in cancer-associated pancreatic cancer cells (PSCs) compared with cancer cells and normal PSCs. Antitumor Activity of Potent Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Kinase 4 Inhibitors from Plants in Pancreatic Cancer

Cryptotanshinone (KIS37) inhibited anchorage-independent growth in three-dimensional spheroid and soft agar colony formation assays of KRAS-activated human pancreatic and colorectal cancer cell lines. KIS37 also suppressed KRAS protein expression in such cell lines. [Mol Carcinog] Abstract
