Renal Cells from Spermatogonial Germline Stem Cells Protect against Kidney Injury
Using a novel renal epithelial differentiation protocol, scientists obtained germline cell-derived pluripotent stem cell-derived tubular-like cells (GTCs) that were functional in vitro, as demonstrated through transepithelial electrical resistance analysis. In mice, GTCs injected after ischemic renal injury homed to the renal parenchyma, and GTC-treated mice showed reduced renal oxidative stress, tubular apoptosis, and cortical damage and upregulated tubular expression of the antioxidant enzyme hemeoxygenase-1. [J Am Soc Nephrol] Abstract

Epicardial Delivery of Collagen Patches with Adipose-Derived Stem Cells in Rat and Minipig Models of Chronic Myocardial Infarction
Investigators examined whether transplantation of collagen patches seeded with adipose-derived stem cells could enhance cell engraftment and improve cardiac function in models of chronic myocardial infarction. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Vasculogenesis in Experimental Stroke after Human Cerebral Endothelial Cell Transplantation
Adult rats were exposed to transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery and three hours later randomly stereotaxically transplanted with 100K, 200K, or 400K human cerebral endothelial cell six viable cells or vehicle. Animals underwent neurological examination and motor test up to day seven after transplantation then euthanized for immunostaining against neuronal, vascular, and specific human antigens. [Stroke] Abstract

SLIT3-ROBO4 Activation Promotes Vascular Network Formation in Human Engineered Tissue and Angiogenesis In Vivo
By utilizing two functionally distinct human mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) clones, researchers found that so-called “pericytic” MSCs secrete the pro-angiogenic vascular guidance molecule SLIT3, which guides vascular development by directing ROBO4-positive endothelial cells to form networks in engineered tissue.
