Distinct Functions for Wnt/β-Catenin in Hair Follicle Stem Cell Proliferation and Survival and Interfollicular Epidermal Homeostasis By inducibly deleting β-catenin globally in skin epithelia, only in hair follicle stem cells, or only in interfollicular epidermis and comparing the phenotypes with those caused by ectopic expression of the Wnt/β-catenin inhibitor Dkk1, scientists showed that the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is necessary for hair follicle stem cell proliferation. Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Cell-Based Therapy with Tyrosine Hydroxylase-Positive Catecholaminergic Cells in Experimental Arthritis Scientists studied tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression and release of cytokines/catecholamines. In vivo function was tested by cell therapy with TH+ neuronal precursor cells in DBA/1 mice with collagen type II-induced arthritis. Overhaul Recommended for Gene-Therapy Review The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) should refocus its oversight of gene-transfer research, the US Institute of Medicine says. The analysis concludes that the NIH’s Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee, or RAC, should no longer review most gene-therapy research.
