PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)The impact of human cord blood myeloid-derived suppressor cells (CB-MDSCs) on monocytes was investigated in an in vitro model. CB-MDSCs were co-cultured with peripheral blood mononuclear cells and monocytes were analysed for expression of surface markers, T cell stimulatory and phagocytic capacity, as well as the production of intracellular cytokines by flow cytometry. [Pediatr Res] Abstract Researchers investigated the role of induced endothelial cells (iECs) in MSC/iEC co-culture and assessed their osteogenic ability on silk fibroin nanofiber scaffolds. [Regen Med] Full Article | Graphical Abstract The co-culture of cancer cell lines OVCAR3, CAOV3, IGROV3 and SKOV3 with the conditioned media of MSCs and MSCs showed an increase in cellular apoptosis, along with a reduction in the level of CA-125 and a decline of LDH and beta-hCG. [J Ovarian Res] Full Article Investigators compared the impact of agitation mode on the culture of MSCs extracted from the Wharton’s jelly of umbilical cords, in a clinical grade culture medium, using human platelet lysate and different xeno‐free microcarriers. [Biotechnol Prog] Abstract The authors analyzed HLA‐A, ‐B, ‐C, ‐DRB1, and ‐DQB1 allele frequencies in 5458 high‐quality cord blood units from the Barcelona Cord Blood Bank and identified 275 class I and 121 class II HLA alleles. REVIEWSImmunotherapy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia: From Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant to Novel Therapeutics The authors provide an overview of the graft versus leukemia effect in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) as a window into understanding the prospects of AML immunotherapy. They explore the roles of various cell types in orchestrating anti-leukemic immunity, as well as those contributing to the unique immune suppressive state of myeloid diseases. POLICY NEWS‘No One Is Immune’: Alaska’s Scientists Despair over Plan to Shrink State Universities The University of Alaska’s governing board plans to consolidate campuses to cope with a 40% cut in state funding. [Nature News] Editorial Survey of Stem Cell Clinics Reveals Cause for Concern Two coauthors of a new study discuss their findings about nearly 170 facilities in the southwestern US selling unproven therapies—and what should be done about them. [The Scientist] Editorial China’s Scientists Alarmed, Bewildered by Growing Anti-Chinese Sentiment in the United States Scientists in China are concerned about what they see as growing anti-Chinese sentiment in the United States. They dismiss claims of a vast conspiracy to steal US intellectual property and worry that new visa restrictions, scrutiny of export of scientific devices, and US investigations of Chinese and Chinese American scientists will hinder international collaborations. That could harm both countries’ research efforts as well as global scientific progress, many say. [ScienceInsider] Editorial
