The Tetraspanin CD9 Regulates Migration, Adhesion and Homing of Human Cord Blood CD34+ Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells
To investigate the transcriptional regulation provided by stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1)/CXCR4 axis, researchers performed the first differential transcriptome profiling of human cord blood CD34+ cells in response to a short-term exposure of SDF-1, and identified a panel of genes with putative homing functions. Umbilical Cord Cells May Treat Arthritis, Studies Suggest
Umbilical cord stem cells may be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Animal and in vitro experiments have shown that mesenchymal stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood can suppress inflammation and attenuate collagen-induced arthritis. CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Outcomes After Related and Unrelated Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation for Non-Fanconi Hereditary Bone Marrow Failure
In patients with hereditary bone marrow failure syndromes, related umbilical cord blood transplant is associated with excellent outcomes while in unrelated umbilical cord blood transplant increasing cell dose and better HLA matching might provide better results. [Haematologica]

Therapeutic Potential of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Human umbilical cord (UC)-mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) suppressed the various inflammatory effects of fibroblast-like synoviocytes and T cells of rheumatoid arthritis in vitro, and attenuated the development of collagen-induced arthritis in vivo, strongly suggesting that UC-MSCs might be a therapeutic strategy in rheumatoid arthritis. [Arth Res Ther]

Intravenous Human Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation for Stroke: Impact on Infarct Volume and Caspase-3-Dependent Cell Death in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats
Researchers aimed to evaluate the potential neuroprotective effects produced by human umbilical cord blood cells in terms of reduced infarct volume and caspase-3-dependent cell death. [Exp Neurol]

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Does Not Retard Disease Progression in the Psycho-Cognitive Variant of Late-Onset Metachromatic Leukodystrophy
Researchers report detailed clinical and neuropsychological assessments after hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation in a patient with a late-onset psycho-cognitive form of metachromatic leukodystrophy. [J Inherit Metab Dis]

Differential Survival of AML Subpopulations in NOD/SCID Mice
Bone marrow cells from patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) were separated according to CD34 expression, aldehydehydrogenase activity and divisional kinetics in comparison to cord blood-derived CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells, evaluating survival and expansion in NOD/SCID mice. [Exp Hematol]

Polychromatic Flow Cytometry Analysis of CD34+ Hematopoietic Stem Cells in Cryopreserved Early Preterm Human Cord Blood Samples
Results evidence the hematopoietic peculiarity of human early preterm cord blood, potentially useful for highlighting early steps of human hematolymphopoiesis as well as for developing novel strategies of stem cell-based therapy. [Cytometry A]

Schwann Cell-Like Remyelination Following Transplantation of Human Umbilical Cord Blood (hUCB)-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Dogs with Acute Spinal Cord Injury
Researchers conducted preliminary investigations on the remyelination of injured spinal cords with hUCB-mesenchymal stem cell transplantations and observed its long term effects on dogs with spinal cord injury. [Journal Neurol Sci]

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Severe Congenital Neutropenia
Since 2004, eight hematopoietic stem cell transplantations were performed in seven patients. Three grafts were from HLA-identical siblings, three from matched unrelated donors and two were cord blood units. [Pediatr Blood Cancer]

Relationship Between Radiosensitivity of Human Neonatal Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells and Individual Maternal/Neonatal Obstetric Factors
The study investigated the potential relationship between the radiosensitivity of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells in placental/umbilical cord blood, which was obtained from singleton and full-term deliveries, and maternal/neonatal obstetric factors. [J Radiat Res]

Enhanced Osteogenic Differentiation of Cord Blood-Derived Unrestricted Somatic Stem Cells on Electrospun Nanofibers
Observations suggested the enhanced proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of cord blood-derived unrestricted somatic stem cells on poly-L-lactide-collagen nanofiber scaffolds and introduced a new combination of stem cell-scaffold constructs with desired characteristics for application in bone tissue engineering.
