    TOP STORY
Enhanced ROCK Activation in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Researchers assessed Rho-kinase (ROCK) activation in human TH17 cells and evaluated ROCK activity in systemic lupus erythematosus patients. Human cord blood CD4+ T cells differentiated under TH17 conditions expressed higher levels of ROCK activity than CD4+ T cells stimulated under TH0 conditions. [Arthritis Rheum] Abstract

High Aminopeptidase N/CD13 Levels Characterize Human Amniotic Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Drive Their Increased Adipogenic Potential in Obese Women
Investigators aimed to isolate and compare human amniotic mesenchymal stem cell immunophenotypes from obese and normal weight control women to identify alterations possibly predisposing the fetus to obesity. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Unrelated Cord Blood Transplantation: Outcomes after Single-Unit Intrabone Injection Compared with Double-Unit Intravenous Injection in Patients with Hematological Malignancies
In a retrospective registry-based analysis, the authors compared outcomes of 87 intrabone injection of cord blood cells with 149 double-unrelated cord blood transplantation recipients, after myeloablative conditioning regimen adjusting for the differences between the two groups. [Transplantation] Abstract

Adenoviral Infections in Adult Allogeneic Hematopoietic SCT Recipients: A Single Center Experience
A better understanding of adenoviral infection (AI) in allogeneic hematopoietic SCT (allo-HSCT) recipients can serve as a basis to develop more effective management strategies. Researchers evaluated all adult patients who received allo-HSCT at MD Anderson Cancer Center between 1999 and 2008. A multivariable Bayesian logistic regression showed that when the joint effects of all covariates were accounted for, cord blood transplant, absolute lymphocyte count equal to or less than 200/mm3 and male gender were associated with a higher probability of disseminated AI. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Recruitment of Human Cord Blood-Derived Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells to Sites of Tumor Angiogenesis
To evaluate the origin and early phenotype of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and to define a population with enhanced tumor-targeting capacity, investigators evaluated a hierarchy of cord blood-derived EPCs modeling the multi-step nature of tumor homing. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Construction of Engineering Adipose-Like Tissue In Vivo Utilizing Human Insulin Gene-Modified Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stromal Cells with Silk Fibroin 3D Scaffolds
The authors evaluated the use of a combination of human insulin gene-modified umbilical cord mesenchymal stromal cells with silk fibroin 3D scaffolds for adipose tissue engineering. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Analytical Methods for Measuring Collagen XIX in Human Cell Cultures, Tissue Extracts and Biological Fluids
Scientists aimed to develop and validate methods to measure collagen XIX and its fragments in human cell cultures, tissue extracts and human biological fluids. They demonstrated that the methods developed are specific for collagen XIX. These methods may be used in various human tissue extracts and biological fluids such as serum, amniotic fluid, cord blood and many other fluids. [Anal Biochem] Abstract

Ex Vivo Expanded Human Blood-Derived CD133+ Cells Promote Repair of Injured Spinal Cord
Researchers analyzed and compared ex vivo expanded human cord blood derived CD133+ cells with freshly isolated CD133+ cells as well as corresponding CD133 control mononuclear cells in respect to their ability to promote spinal cord repair using in vitro assays and cell transplantation into a mouse spinal cord injury model. [J Neurol Sci] Abstract

Myocardial Structural Protein Expression in Umbilical Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stem Cells after Myogenic Induction
To assess the effects of three methods of inducing myogenic cells differentiation, umbilical blood mesenchymal stem cells from nearly full-term pregnancy mongrel dogs were purified and cultured. [Cell Biol Int] Abstract

New StemSpan(TM) SFEM II - for optimal CD34+ cell expansion of bone marrow and cord blood cells
