    TOP STORY
LIN28B-Mediated Expression of Fetal Hemoglobin and Production of Fetal-Like Erythrocytes from Adult Human Erythroblasts Ex Vivo
To explore the effects of LIN28B in human erythroid cell development, lentiviral transduction was utilized to knockdown LIN28B expression in erythroblasts cultured from human umbilical cord CD34+ cells. [Blood] Abstract
Technical Bulletin: Assays For Cord Blood

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Alternative Xeno-Free Biomaterials Derived from Human Umbilical Cord for the Self-Renewal Ex Vivo Expansion of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers investigated whether human umbilical cord extract could serve as a serum replacement and whether collagen purified from umbilical cord could act as an extracellular matrix for the in vitro culture of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human umbilical cord. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

IFN-Gamma Stimulated Human Umbilical-Tissue Derived Cells Potently Suppress NK Activation and Resist NK Mediated Cytotoxicity In Vitro
Scientists evaluated in vitro Natural Killer (NK) cell interactions with human umbilical tissue-derived cells (hUTC) and compared it to human mesenchymal stem cells. Their investigations showed that hUTC suppress NK activation, through prostaglandin-E2 secretion in a contact independent manner. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Inhibitory Effect of Glyceollins on Vasculogenesis through Suppression of Endothelial Progenitor Cell Function
Investigators aimed to determine the effect of glyceollin treatment on endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) during early tumor vasculogenesis. They found that glyceollin treatment significantly decreased the number of EPC colony-forming units in human cord blood-derived AC133+ cells and mouse bone-marrow-derived c-Kit+/Sca-1+/Lin cells. [Mol Nutr Food Res] Abstract

Maturation of CD4+ Regulatory T Lymphocytes and of Cytokine Secretions in Infants Born Prematurely
The proportions of CD4+ regulatory T lymphocyte cells, their phenotypic characteristics, and the mitogen-induced cytokine productions by peripheral blood mononuclear cells were analyz ed in 26 very-preterm infants from 2 to 16 months of age, and compared to results obtained for 17 cord blood mononuclear cells from very-preterm infants, 12 from term infants and to blood samples from 40 adults. [J Clin Immunol] Abstract

Unrelated Cord Blood Transplantation for Central Nervous System Relapse in High-Risk Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Scientists aimed to identify the potential benefits of unrelated cord blood transplantation in high-risk childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia with central nervous system (CNS) relapse who has been treated on CNS-directed treatment strategies. [Ann Hematol] Abstract

Human Umbilical-Cord-Blood Mononucleated Cells Enhance the Survival of Lethally Irradiated Mice: Dosage and the Window of Time
Researchers evaluated the window of time and dose of human umbilical-cord-blood mononucleated cells necessary for successful treatment of radiation injury in mice. [J Radiat Res] Full Article

Unrelated and Alternative Donor Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant in Patients with Relapsed or Refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Systematic Review
The aim of this systematic review was to determine the benefits and harms of allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) with an unrelated donor versus related donor allo-SCT for adult patients with Hodgkin lymphoma. Alternative donor sources such as haploidentical donor cells and umbilical cord blood were also included. [Leuk Lymphoma] Abstract
