    TOP STORY
Differential Regulation of the Apoptotic Machinery during Megakaryocyte Differentiation and Platelet Production by Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein Livin
To evaluate the potential role of Livin in thrombopoiesis, investigators used the human BCR-ABL+ cell line, LAMA-84, and cord blood CD34+ cells to induce differentiation toward megakaryocytes. [Cell Death Dis]

Rapid Transfer of Endothelial Cell Sheet Using a Thermosensitive Hydrogel and Its Effect on Therapeutic Angiogenesis
Thermosensitive hydrogels incorporated with multiple cell-interactive factors were developed as a substrate to form a monolayer of human umbilical vein endothelial cells that can be detached and transferrable to target sites as a cell-sheet in response to temperature change. [Biomacromolecules] Abstract

α-Santalol Inhibits the Angiogenesis and Growth of Human Prostate Tumor Growth by Targeting Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 2-Mediated AKT/mTOR/P70S6K Signaling Pathway
Investigators used α-santalol and analyzed its inhibitory effects on human umbilical vein endothelial cells and Prostate tumor cells (PC-3 or LNCaP) in vitro. [Mol Cancer] Full Article

Hepatocyte-Like Cells Derived from Human Amniotic Epithelial Cells Can Be Encapsulated without Loss of Viability or Function In Vitro
Scientists investigated the characteristics of hepatocyte-like cells (HLC) generated from human amniotic epithelial cells and examined the effects of encapsulation on HLC viability, gene expression and function. [Stem Cell Dev] Abstract

Real-Time Monitoring and Control of Soluble Signaling Factors Enables Enhanced Progenitor Cell Outputs from Human Cord Blood Stem Cell Cultures
Researchers describe the development of a microbead-based process control system for the monitoring and control of endogenously produced signaling factors. This monitoring system was incorporated into a fed-batch bioreactor to regulate the accumulation of TGF-β1 in an umbilical cord blood cell expansion system. [Biotechnol Bioeng] Abstract

Hyperglycemia Modifies Energy Metabolism and Reactive Oxygen Species Formation in Endothelial Cells In Vitro
Scientists aimed to describe changes in the mitochondrial metabolism of human umbilical vein endothelial cells treated with high glucose concentrations and to indicate the actual source of reactive oxygen species in these cells. [Arch Biochem Biophys] Abstract

Ghrelin Protects Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells against High Glucose-Induced Apoptosis via mTOR/P70S6K Signaling Pathway
The authors investigated the intracellular mechanisms responsible for anti-apoptotic effect of ghrelin on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Treatment of HUVEC with ghrelin inhibited high glucose-induced cell apoptosis. [Peptides] Abstract

Reticulocytes from Cryopreserved Erythroblasts Support Plasmodium vivax Infection In Vitro
Researchers report an improved method of hematopoietic stem cell culture for P. vivax infection, which requires less time and produces higher or equivalent percentage of reticulocytes than previously reported systems. Reticulocytes were cultured from cryopreserved erythroblasts that were frozen after 8 day-cultivation of purified CD34+ cells from human umbilical cord blood. [Parasitol Int] Abstract

Modeling Normal and Malignant Human Hematopoiesis In Vivo through Newborn NSG Xenotransplantation
NOD/SCID mice harboring complete null mutation of Il2rg (NSG mice) lack T cells, B cells, and NK cells, and support high levels of engraftment by human cord blood hematopoietic stem cells and acute myeloid leukemia stem cells. [Int J Hematol] Abstract

    REVIEWS
Immunological Characteristics of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells and the Therapeutic Effects of Their Transplantation on Hyperglycemia in Diabetic Rats
In addition to achieving high levels of human hematopoietic cell engraftment, use of newborn NOD/SCID mice harboring complete null mutation of Il2rg (NSG mice) as recipients has enabled the investigation into how human cord blood hematopoietic stem cells generate mature immune subsets in vivo. [Int J Mol Med] Abstract
