    TOP STORY
Study Finds Stem Cell Combination Therapy Improves Traumatic Brain Injury Outcomes
In their study of several different therapies – alone and in combination – applied to laboratory rats modeled with traumatic brain injuries, researchers found that a combination of human umbilical cord blood cells and granulocyte colony stimulating factor was more therapeutic than either administered alone, or each with saline, or saline alone. [Press release from the University of South Florida discussing online prepublication in PLoS One] Press Release | Full Article
New StemSpan(TM) SFEM II - for optimal CD34+ cell expansion of bone marrow and cord blood cells

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Reactive Oxygen Species Induce Matrix Metalloproteinase-12-Dependent Degradation of Collagen 5 and Fibronectin to Promote the Motility of Human Umbilical Cord Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The authors investigated the role of hydrogen peroxide in promoting umbilical cord blood derived mesenchymal stem cell motility and its related signaling pathways. [Br J Pharmacol] Abstract

Cryopreservation Effects on Wharton’s Jelly Stem Cells Proteome
Researchers investigated molecular changes that occur in Wharton’s Jelly stem cells proteome in different experimental conditions: fresh primary cell culture and frozen cell. [Stem Cell Rev] Abstract

Incidence and Outcome of Invasive Fungal Diseases after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Prospective Study of the Gruppo Italiano Trapianto Midollo Osseo (GITMO)
Epidemiological investigation on invasive fungal diseases (IFD) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant may be useful to identify sub-populations who might benefit from targeted strategies. Using logistic regression methods researchers did analyses in order to identify risk factors for proven/probable IFD (PP-IFD) during the early (days 0-40), late (days 41-100) and very late (days 101-365) phases after transplant and to evaluate the impact of PP-IFDs on the one-year overall-survival. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Effects of THAP11 on Erythroid Differentiation and Megakaryocytic Differentiation of K562 Cells
Researchers showed that THAP11 was down-regulated during erythroid differentiation but up-regulated during megakaryocytic differentiation of cord blood CD34+ cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

Cell-Based Regenerative Strategies for Treatment of Diabetic Skin Wounds, a Comparative Study between Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Mononuclear Cells and Calves’ Blood Hemodialysate
Systemic administration of human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) derived mononuclear cells and topical application of the newly prepared HUCB-hemodialysate (HD) or calves’ blood HD significantly accelerated the rate of diabetic wound healing and would open the possibility of their future use in regenerative medicine. [PLoS One] Full Article

Functional Differentiation of Midbrain Neurons from Human Cord Blood-Derived Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
Researchers aimed to establish a differentiation strategy to efficiently generate neurons including dopaminergic cells from human cord blood-derived induced pluripotent stem cells as a juvenescent cell source and prove their functional maturation in vitro. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Abstract | Full Article

Aldehyde Dehydrogenase-Bright Cells Correlated with the Colony-Forming Unit-Granulocyte-Macrophage Assay of Thawed Cord Blood Units
The number of aldehyde dehydrogenase-bright (ALDHbr) cells has been suggested as a viable marker of hematopoietic stem cell function. Researchers evaluated the suitability of ALDHbr cell analysis in the quality assessment of post-thaw cord blood units. [Transfusion] Abstract

Effect of Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation on Neuronal Metabolites in Ischemic Rabbits
Because there is little research on the effects of transplanted stem cells on neuronal metabolites in infarct areas, researchers transplanted human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells into cerebral ischemic rabbits and examined the neuronal metabolites.
