    TOP STORY
Rapid Induction of Single Donor Chimerism after Double Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation Preceded by Reduced Intensity Conditioning: Results of the HOVON 106 Phase II Study
Investigators evaluated engraftment, early chimerism, recovery of different cell lineages and transplant outcome in 53 patients receiving a double cord blood transplantation preceded by a reduced intensity conditioning regimen. [Haematologica] Abstract | Full Article

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Induction of Adult Levels of β-Globin in Human Erythroid Cells that Intrinsically Express Embryonic or Fetal Globin by Transduction with KLF1 and BCL11A-XL
The key regulators of globin switching KLF1 and BCL11A are absent or at a lower level than in adult cells in K562 and erythroid cells differentiated in vitro from induced pluripotent stem cells and cord blood progenitors. [Haematologica] Abstract | Full Article

Cooperation between Human Fibrocytes and Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells Increases Angiogenesis via the CXCR4 Pathway
Scientists investigated the angiogenic interaction between fibrocytes and cord-blood-derived endothelial colony-forming cells, both in vitro and in an in vivo Matrigel implant model. [Thromb Haemost]

Intra-Arterial Immunoselected CD34+ Stem Cells for Acute Ischemic Stroke
Investigators aimed to determine the safety and feasibility of treatment with CD34+ cells delivered intra-arterially in patients with acute ischemic stroke. This was the first study in human subjects. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

BAT2 and BAT3 Polymorphisms as Novel Genetic Risk Factors for Rejection after HLA-Related SCT
Investigators applied whole-genome analysis to investigate genetic variants-other than HLA class I and II-associated with negative outcome after HLA-identical sibling allogeneic hematopoietic SCT in a cohort of 110 β-thalassemic patients. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Nonmyeloablative Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem-Cell Transplantation for GATA2 Deficiency
Researchers treated 14 patients with GATA2 deficiency using a nonmyeloablative allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation regimen. Four patients received peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) from matched-related donors, four patients received PBSC from matched-unrelated donors, four patients received HSC from umbilical cord blood donors, and two patients received bone marrow cells from haploidentical related donors. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Osteogenic Differentiation of Amniotic Epithelial Cells: Synergism of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field and Biochemical Stimuli
Amniotic epithelial cells (AECs) have been proposed as a potential source of stem cells for cell therapy. However, whether pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) could modulate the osteogenic differentiation of AECs is unknown. The effects of PEMF on the osteogenic differentiation of AECs were investigated. [BMC Musculoskelet Disord] Abstract | Full Article

Comprehensive Study of Hydrostatic Pressure Treated Human Umbilical Cord Blood Cells via Response Surface Method
The preparation of umbilical cord blood samples through an active (mechanical) pre-stressing process to increase the survival rate of cryopreserved samples can be regarded as a novel strategy that calls for basic experimental studies. Investigators assessed the effects of hydrostatic pressure treatment on the qualifying parameters. [Cryobiology] Abstract

    REVIEWS
Cell Therapies for Tendons: Old Cell Choice for Modern Innovation
Cell sources for tissue engineering and cell therapies for tendon pathologies are reviewed with an emphasis on small defect tendon injuries as seen in the hand which could adapt well to injectable cell administration. Specifically, cell sources including tenocytes, tendon sheath fibroblasts, bone marrow or adipose-derived stem cells, amniotic cells, placenta cells and platelet-derivatives have been proposed to enhance tendon regeneration. INDUSTRY NEWS
US Patent Issued for the Treatment of ALS with Cord Blood Cells
Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair scientists have been awarded a United States patent for their pioneering discoveries related to the treatment of ALS with umbilical cord blood cells. [University of South Florida] Press Release | Patent

First Stem Cell Production Facility to Focus on Immune-Matching Therapies Opens at CHOC
A new stem cell production facility at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) will allow researchers to produce patient-specific cells for future immune-matching therapies that could positively impact fatal neurological diseases in children. The approach involves using umbilical cord blood to replace a patient’s immune system, then implanting neural cells derived from the same blood into the brain to repair and prevent brain damage. [Children’s Hospital of Orange County] Press Release
