    TOP STORY
Unrelated Cord Blood Compared with Haploidentical Grafts in Patients with Hematological Malignancies
Investigators compared the outcome of patients after haplo and umbilical cord blood grafts prepared using a nonmyeloablative conditioning regimen. A total of 150 adult patients with high-risk hematologic diseases who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from alternative donors at two centers were analyzed. [Cancer] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Immunogenicity of Decidual Stromal Cells in an Epidermolysis Bullosa Patient and in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Patients
Researchers monitored the therapeutic and immunogenic effects of decidual stromal cells from term placentas when used as a therapy for generalized severe junctional epidermolysis bullosa, a lethal condition caused by the lack of functional laminin-332. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

No Synergistic Effect of Co-Transplantation of MSC and Ex Vivo TPO Expanded CD34+ Cord Blood Cells on Platelet Recovery and Bone Marrow Engraftment in NOD SCID Mice
After cord blood transplantation, early platelet recovery in immune deficient mice is obtained by expansion of cord blood (CB) CD34+ cells with TPO as single growth factor. Moreover, improvement of hematopoietic engraftment has been shown by co-transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Scientists investigated whether a combination of both approaches would further enhance the outcome of CB transplantation in NOD SCID mice. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Transplantation of Human Placenta-Derived Multipotent Stem Cells Reduces Ischemic Brain Injury in Adult Rats
Investigators examined the protective effect of human placenta derived multipotent stem cell transplants in a rodent model of stroke. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized. [Cell Transplant] Full Article

Alteration of Histone Acetylation Pattern during Long-Term Serum-Free Culture Conditions of Human Fetal Placental Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Alterations to histone acetylation and consequence on the expression pattern of mesenchymal stem cells derived from placenta of fetal origin following in vitro propagation under serum-free conditions were explored. [PLoS One] Full Article

Sorafenib Treatment following Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant in Pediatric FLT3/ITD Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Investigators conducted a retrospective study of 15 pediatric patients with FLT3/ITD+ acute myeloid leukemia treated with sorafenib within 18 months after receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. [Pediatr Blood Cancer] Abstract

Allogeneic Donor Availability for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Children with Sickle Cell Disease
Searches for 85 patients with sickle cell disease without matched sibling donors from 2009-2013 using modern techniques showed potential match probabilities of 20% for 8/8 HLA-matched unrelated donors, 84% for 7/8 donors, and 97% for two 4-6/6 umbilical cord blood samples suitable for ex-vivo expanded/double cord transplant. [Pediatr Blood Cancer] Abstract

Third Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation (SCT) Using Unrelated Cord Blood for Relapsed Acute Leukemia after Second Allogeneic SCT
Investigators analyzed the results of third allogeneic stem cell transplantation using single-unit unrelated cord blood in seven adult patients with relapsed acute leukemia after second allogeneic SCT. [Int J Hematol] Abstract

Alternative Donor Transplantation — “Mixing and Matching”: The Role of Combined Cord Blood and Haplo-Identical Donor Transplantation (Haplo-Cord SCT) as a Treatment Strategy for Patients Lacking Standard Donors?
In the past decade, haplo-cord SCT using myeloablative or reduced intensive conditioning regimens has been shown to result in reliable and fast engraftment of neutrophils and platelets comparable to HLA-matched donors and much faster than after cord stem cell transplant. [Curr Hematol Malig Rep] Abstract
