IL-1β Inhibits ILC3 While Favoring NK-Cell Maturation of Umbilical Cord Blood CD34+ Precursors
Investigators analyzed the effects of IL-1β on NK-cell differentiation from umbilical cord blood CD34+ cells. While IL-1β inhibited CD161+CD56+ cell proliferation, an increased expression of LFA-1, CD94/NKG2A, KIRs, Perforin on CD56+ cells was detected. [Eur J Immunol] Abstract

Prolonged Sirolimus Administration after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Is Associated with Decreased Risk for Moderate-Severe Chronic Graft vs. Host Disease
In a long-term follow up analysis of a randomized Phase II trial comparing sirolimus/tacrolimus vs. methotrexate/tacrolimus for graft vs. host disease prevention in matched sibling or unrelated donor transplant, investigators examined the impact of prolonged sirolimus administration. Hepatocyte Growth Factor Gene-Modified Mesenchymal Stem Cells Augment Sinonasal Wound Healing
Scientists investigated the effects of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) transgenic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on wound healing in the sinonasal mucosa and nasal epithelial cells. Human HGF-overexpressing umbilical cord MSCs were established and upregulation of hHGF expression was confirmed by RT-PCR and ELISA. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cell Exosomes Enhance Angiogenesis through the Wnt4/β-Catenin Pathway
The authors isolated and characterized the exosomes from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSC-Ex) and demonstrated that hucMSC-Ex promoted the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of endothelial cells in a dose-dependent manner. They demonstrated that hucMSC-Ex promoted wound healing and angiogenesis in vivo by using a rat skin burn model. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

Multi-Lineage Differentiation of Human Umbilical Cord Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Mediates Changes in the Expression Profile of Stemness Markers
Wharton’s Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) were isolated and characterized for stemness and surface markers expression. Flow cytometry, immunofluorescence and qRT-PCR analysis revealed predominant expression of CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90, CD105 and CD166 in WJ-MSCs, while the hematopoietic and endothelial markers were absent. A Single High-Resolution HLA Mismatch Has a Similar Adverse Impact on the Outcome of Related Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation as a Single Low-Resolution HLA Mismatch
Researchers retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent a first related hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from an HLA high-resolution matched, high-resolution one locus-mismatched, or low-resolution one locus-mismatched related donor in the graft-versus-host direction at three loci using the database of the Japan Society for Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation. [Am J Hematol] Abstract

Dynamical System Modeling of Immune Reconstitution following Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation Identifies Patients at Risk for Adverse Outcomes
Lymphocyte recovery and clinical outcomes in 41 allograft recipients conditioned using anti-thymocyte globulin and 4.5 Gray total-body-irradiation were studied to determine if immune reconstitution could be described as a dynamical system. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract | Graphical Abstract

Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation in Adults with Advanced Hodgkin’s Disease: High Incidence of Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disease
Researchers report the outcome of 30 consecutive Hodgkin’s disease patients who underwent single unit umbilical cord blood transplantation. Most patients had failed previous autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. [Eur J Haematol] Abstract

Cord Blood Is the Optimal Graft Source for the Treatment of Pediatric Patients with Lysosomal Storage Diseases: Clinical Outcomes and Future Directions
Initially used as an alternative hematopoietic stem cell source for patients without a human leukocyte antigen-matched bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell donor, unrelated cord blood is now the preferred donor source when hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is used to treat patients with lysosomal storage disorders. [Cytotherapy] Abstract
