    TOP STORY
Multimodality Noninvasive Imaging for Assessing Therapeutic Effects of Exogenously Transplanted Cell Aggregates Capable of Angiogenesis on Acute Myocardial Infarction
Three-dimensional aggregates of human umbilical vein endothelial cells and cord-blood mesenchymal stem cells were constructed using a methylcellulose hydrogel system. [Biomaterials] Abstract
Standardize Your CFU Assays With STEMvision for Automated CFU Assay Imaging and Analysis

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Anti-Aging Effect of Transplanted Amniotic Membrane Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Premature Aging Model of Bmi-1 Deficiency
To determine whether transplanted amniotic membrane mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) ameliorated the premature senescent phenotype of Bmi-1-deficient mice, postnatal 2-day-old Bmi-1−/− mice were injected intraperitoneally with the second-passage AMSCs from amniotic membranes of β-galactosidase transgenic mice or wild-type mice labeled with DiI. Human Umbilical Cord Matrix-Derived Stem Cells Exert Trophic Effects on β-Cell Survival in Diabetic Rats and Isolated Islets
Scientists tested whether umbilical cord matrix-derived stem cells (uMSCs) could exert direct trophic effects on β-cells. Infusion of uMSCs into chemically induced diabetic rats prevented hyperglycemic progression with a parallel preservation of islet size and cellularity, demonstrating the protective effect of uMSCs on β-cells. [Dis Model Mech] Abstract

Impact of MRD and TKI on Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation for Ph+ALL: A Study from the Adult ALL WG of the JSHCT
The authors retrospectively analyzed data from a registry database for 432 adult Ph-positive ALL (Ph+ALL) patients in first CR who received pre-transplant tyrosine kinase inhibitor administration. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Should Busulfan Therapeutic Range Be Narrowed in Pediatrics? Experience from a Large Cohort of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Children
Researchers report their experience with busulfan therapeutic drug monitoring in a large cohort of children. They investigated the relevance of using a more restricted therapeutic range and investigated the association between busulfan therapeutic range and clinical outcome. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Magnetic Resonance Detection of CD34+ Cells from Umbilical Cord Blood Using a 19F Label
Researchers showed sufficient intracellular labeling of umbilical cord blood-derived CD34+ cells, with 19F-containing PLGA nanoparticles which were detectable with both flow cytometry and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. [PLoS One] Full Article

Hypoxic Preconditioning Increases Survival and Pro-Angiogenic Capacity of Human Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stromal Cells In Vitro
Scientists developed a specific hypoxic preconditioning protocol and investigated its anti-apoptotic and pro-angiogenic effects on cord blood mesenchymal stromal cells undergoing simulated ischemia in vitro by subjecting them to hypoxia and nutrient deprivation with or without preceding hypoxic preconditioning. [PLoS One] Full Article

European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation Analysis of Treosulfan Conditioning before Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Children and Adolescents with Hematological Malignancies
Investigators performed a retrospective analysis of 193 children with hematological malignancies undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation following treosulfan. [Pediatr Blood Cancer] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine: Focus on Articular Cartilage and Intervertebral Disc Regeneration
The authors discuss the biology of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and chondroprogenitor cells and specifically focus on umbilical cord/Wharton’s jelly derived MSCs and examine their potential for regenerative applications. [Methods] Abstract

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and GenomOncology Codeveloping Multi-assay Integrated Cancer Profiling System
GenomOncology and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital announced that they are co-developing an interpretation and reporting system for multi-assay cancer profiling. Jefferson expects to launch the system for testing acute myeloid leukemia in their molecular pathology laboratory. [GenomOncology LLC.] Press Release

FDA Grants Priority Review for Amgen’s Supplemental New Drug Application for Expanded Labeling of Kyprolis® (Carfilzomib) in Relapsed Multiple Myeloma
Amgen announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted for priority review the supplemental new drug application (sNDA) of Kyprolis® (carfilzomib) for injection for patients with relapsed multiple myeloma. The sNDA is designed to expand the current indication to include Kyprolis in combination with dexamethasone for patients who have received at least one prior therapy. [Amgen] Press Release

    POLICY NEWS
    Canadian Election Spotlights Scientists’ Frustrations
Canadians will head to the polls on October 19th, in a federal election that many scientists hope will mark a turning point after years of declining research budgets and allegations of government censorship. Although science has not emerged as a top issue during the campaign, researchers are fighting to make their concerns heard. [Nature News] Editorial
