    TOP STORY
Reduced Intensity Haplo plus Single Cord Transplant Compared to Double Cord Transplant: Improved Engraftment and Survival Free of Progression and GVHD (GRFS)
The authors compared the outcomes of haplo-cord and double-cord transplants. 97 adults underwent reduced intensity conditioning followed by haplo-cord transplant and 193 patients received reduced intensity conditioning followed by double umbilical cord blood transplantation. [Haematologica] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Time Related Variations in Stem Cell Harvesting of Umbilical Cord Blood
Scientists retrospectively analyzed cord blood donations collected from 1999 to 2011. Results from generalized multivariable linear mixed models showed that cord blood volume, total nucleated cells and CD34+ cell were associated with known obstetric and neonatal parameters and showed rhythmic patterns in different time domains and frequency ranges. Adapting Coculture In Vitro Models of the Blood-Brain Barrier for Use in Cancer Research: Maintaining an Appropriate Endothelial Monolayer for the Assessment of Transendothelial Migration
The authors adapted an existing in vitro model of the human blood–brain barrier for use in studying cancer cell transmigration. The model is based on the coculture of endothelial cells (derived from cord blood hematopoietic stem cells) and brain pericytes. [Lab Invest] Abstract

Hypoxic Conditioned Medium of Placenta-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Protects against Scar Formation
Researchers showed that hypoxic conditioned medium of placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PMSCs) reduced scar formation in vivo and inhibited the proliferation and migration of skin fibroblasts in vitro. The level of IL-10 was affected by hypoxia, treatment with IL-10 mimicked the function of hypoxic conditioned medium of PMSCs and inhibition of IL-10 reversed the protective role of hypoxic conditioned medium of PMSCs. [Life Sci] Abstract

Effect of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation in a Rat Model of Preeclampsia
The authors tested the effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transplantation on reversing preeclampsia (PE) symptoms in a lipopolysaccharide-induced rat PE model. [Reprod Sci] Abstract

Phenotypic and Functional Characterization of Mesenchymal Stem/Multipotent Stromal Cells From Decidua Parietalis of Human Term Placenta
Investigators carried out an extensive characterization of decidua parietalis of human placenta. They report that these cells express and secrete a wide range of molecules with multiple functions. [Reprod Sci] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stromal Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Protect Against Acute Kidney Injury Through Anti-Oxidation by Enhancing Nrf2/ARE Activation in Rats
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) isolated from the conditioned medium of human Wharton’s Jelly mesenchymal stromal cells and human foreskin fibroblast were intravenously injected in rats immediately after 45 min of unilateral kidney ischemia. They showed that renal tubular injury was alleviated and renal function was improved by mesenchymal stem cell-EVs. [Kidney Blood Press Res] Full Article

Orchestration of B Lymphoid Cells and Their Inner Myeloid by Bach
The Bach2 gene regulatory networks support the myeloid-based model of hematopoiesis. Myeloid-like characteristics suppressed or manifested in B cells by modifying differentiation trajectories of B and myeloid cells may be termed as ‘inner myeloid’ after the concept of ‘inner fish’. [Curr Opin Immunol] Abstract

    INDUSTRY NEWS
CIRM Invests in Treatment Focused on High Risk Blood Cancers, Leukemia and Lymphoma
Cord blood transplants can be life saving for people battling deadly blood cancers, but they can also cause complications that are life-threatening. That’s why the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) has approved almost $3.5 million to fund a program to find a more effective, efficient and safer way to deliver those transplants. National Institutes of Health’s NIAID Initiating Dose Evaluation Studies in Animal Models of Pluristem’s PLX-R18 in the Treatment of Acute Radiation Syndrome
Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. announced that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) will initiate studies in large animals to evaluate dosing for Pluristem’s PLX-R18 as a medical counter measure in the treatment of the hematologic components of Acute Radiation Syndrome. New Innovative National Center for Blood Group Genomics Created by the New York Blood Center (NYBC) in Kansas City, MO
NYBC, along with its partner organization Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City, announced the creation of the National Center for Blood Group Genomics. Based in Kansas City, the focus of the new laboratory and research center will be national in scope, targeting the testing of blood donor and patient samples from across the nation.
