Massive Clonal Selection and Transiently Contributing Clones during Expansion of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Cultures Revealed by Lentiviral RGB-Barcode Technology
Investigators used multicolor lentiviral barcode labeling to follow the clonal dynamics during in vitro mesenchymal stem (or stromal) cells expansion from whole umbilical cord pieces. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Tissue-Specific Differentiation Potency of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells from Perinatal Tissues
Scientists successfully isolated and cultured mesenchymal stromal cells from amnion (AMSCs), chorion, and umbilical cord. Proliferation potential was different among them, that AMSCs revealed the lowest proliferation rate due to increased Annexin V and senescence-associated β-galactosidase positive cells. Impact of Early CMV Reactivation in Cord Blood Stem Cell Recipients in the Current Era
The unique combination of higher incidence of CMV reactivation in the seropositive recipient and lower incidence of graft versus host disease in cord blood (CB) hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) permits a valuable design to analyze the impact of CMV reactivation. Data from 1684 patients transplanted with CB between 2003 and 2010 for AML and ALL were analyzed. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation for Patients Aged 60 Years or Older with Refractory or Relapsed Classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: A Retrospective Analysis from the French Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cell Therapies (SFGM-TC)
Researchers retrospectively analyzed the outcome of 91 patients aged 60 years or older with refractory/relapsed classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma who underwent autologous stem cell transplantation between 1992 and 2013 and were reported to the French Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cell Therapies registry. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Cytogenetics Does Not Impact the Outcome of Adult Patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Undergoing Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation
Investigators retrospectively analyzed the outcome of 333 adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at their institution over a 10-year period. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

VCAM-1+ Placenta Chorionic Villi-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Display Potent Pro-Angiogenic Activity
Researchers assessed whether VCAM-1 can be used as a marker of mesenchymal stem cells subpopulation with superior angiogenic potential. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article

DMSO- and Serum-Free Cryopreservation of Wharton’s Jelly Tissue Isolated from Human Umbilical Cord
Investigators compared the effect of two different cryoprotectants (dimethyl sulfoxide [DMSO] & cocktail solution) on post-thaw cell behavior upon freezing of Wharton’s jelly tissue following two different freezing protocols. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

A Novel Molecular and Functional Stemness Signature Assessing Human Cord Blood-Derived Endothelial Progenitor Cell Immaturity
To better characterize cord blood-derived-endothelial colony forming cells stemness, scientists quantified their clonogenic potential and demonstrated that they were reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells more efficiently and rapidly than adult endothelial cells. The Placenta as an Organ and a Source of Stem Cells and Extracellular Matrix: A Review
Differences among several mammalian species regarding the placental types and classifications, phenotypes and potency of placenta-derived stem/progenitor cells, placental extracellular matrix (ECM) components and current placental ECM applications were reviewed to highlight their potential clinical and biomedical relevance.
