PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)DERMAL STEM CELLS & TISSUE REGENERATIONScientists studied the efficacy of transplanting a combination of autologous, noncultured epidermal cell suspension (ECS) and follicular cell suspension (FCS) (ECS + FCS) compared with ECS alone in stable vitiligo. [JAMA Dermatol] Full Article Researchers demonstrated that intradermal administration of a single extracellular matrix molecule—fibromodulin protein—can significantly reduce scar size, increase tensile strength, and improve dermal collagen architecture organization in the normal and even excessive-mechanical-loading red Duroc pig wound models. [J Cell Mol Med] Full Article The authors investigated a specific bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell sheet that was induced by the Traditional Chinese Medicine curcumin and its immunomodulatory effects on wound repair. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article Human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) and immortalized keratinocytes (HaCat cells) mono- or co-cultured in serum or serum-free medium were compared and analyzed via the platform. Investigators demonstrated that serum depletion had significant influence on the attachment of HaCat cells onto tissue culture plastic, porous substrates and cellulosic scaffolds, which was further enhanced by the pre-seeded HDFs. [Int J Mol Sci] Full Article SKIN CANCERS & DISORDERSTumor Architecture and Notch Signaling Modulate Drug Response in Basal Cell Carcinoma Scientists showed that basal cell carcinomas are organized into two molecularly and functionally distinct compartments. Whereas interior Hh+/Notch+ suprabasal cells undergo apoptosis in response to vismodegib, peripheral Hh+++/Notch− basal cells survive throughout treatment. [Cancer Cell] Abstract | Graphical Abstract Investigators showed that Nur77 is required for the metabolic adaptation of melanoma cells by protecting fatty acid oxidation. [Mol Cell] Abstract | Graphical Abstract PHLPP1 Mediates Melanoma Metastasis Suppression through Repressing AKT2 Activation Researchers showed that PHLPP1 expression was significantly downregulated or lost and correlated with metastatic potential in melanoma. Forcing expression of either PHLPP1 or PHLPP2 in melanoma cells inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and colony formation in soft agar; but PHLPP1 had the most profound inhibitory effect on metastasis. [Oncogene] Abstract Scientists showed that the two acylguanidine analogs, compound (1) and its novel fluoride derivative (2), strongly reduce growth and self-renewal of melanoma cells, inhibiting the level of the Hedgehog signaling target GLI1 in a dose-dependent manner. INDUSTRY NEWSSensus Healthcare, Inc. announced Sensus’ collaboration with BirchBioMed Inc. to treat and prevent scarring more effectively for patients who are afflicted with keloids. [Sensus Healthcare, Inc. (PR Newswire Association LLC.)] Press Release SkylineDx Inks Joint Development Agreement with Mayo Clinic to Develop Diagnostic Tests for Melanoma SkylineDx today announced a strategic collaboration with Mayo Clinic to develop novel diagnostic tests which will improve clinical decision making for melanoma patients. [SkylineDx] Press Release PolarityTE, Inc. announced that initial results from the clinical applications of the commercially launched SkinTE are yielding outcomes that are correlative with the Company’s preclinical research, which resulted in regenerative healing of full-thickness hair-bearing skin, including all layers (epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis) and glands. [PolarityTE, Inc.] Press Release Skin Biology Receives US Patent for Non-toxic Skin Cancer Therapy with Copper Peptides Skin Biology Inc. announced that they have received US patent 9,586,989 for “Non-toxic skin cancer therapy with copper peptides”. The patent describes a method to biologically remove basal skin cancers in humans and melanomas in horses. [Skin Biology Inc. (Business Wire, Inc.)] Press Release | |

POLICY NEWSPubmed Commons Closes Its Doors to Comments The US National Institutes of Health announced that it will discontinue PubMed Commons, a tool that allows scientists to comment on articles indexed in the agency’s popular PubMed database of biomedical literature. The agency said low levels of engagement and the growth of alternate venues for public discussion of published papers contributed to its decision to close PubMed Commons after five years. [Nature News] Editorial Nature Journals Tighten Rules on Non-Financial Conflicts What makes a conflict of interest in science? Definitions differ, but broadly agree on one thing: an influence that can cloud a researcher’s objectivity. For some people, that influence can be money. But there are other influences that can interfere, such as institutional loyalty, personal beliefs and ambition. [Nature News] Editorial
