TOP STORYInvestigators examined zebrafish for the presence of brain lymphatics and found loosely connected endothelial cells with lymphatic molecular signature covering parts of the brain without forming endothelial tubular structures. These brain lymphatic endothelial cells derive from venous endothelium, are distinct from macrophages, and are sensitive to loss of Vegfc. [eLife] Abstract | Download Full Article | |

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Thrombospondin-4 Mediates TGF-β-Induced Angiogenesis Scientists describe a novel pathway that mediates induction of angiogenesis in response to TGF-β1. They found that in endothelial cells thrombospondin-4, a secreted extracellular matrix protein, was upregulated in response to TGF-β1 and mediates the effects of TGF-β1 on angiogenesis. [Oncogene] Abstract Cardiosphere-Derived Cells Require Endoglin for Paracrine-Mediated Angiogenesis In endothelial cells endoglin regulates angiogenic responses, and researchers therefore hypothesized that endoglin is required to promote the paracrine pro-angiogenic properties of cardiosphere-derived-cells (CDCs). Cre/LoxP technology was used to genetically manipulate endoglin expression in CDCs, and they found that the pro-angiogenic properties of the CDC secretome are endoglin dependent both in vitro and in vivo. [Stem Cell Reports] Full Article The authors investigated the role of Na+/Ca2+ exchange in the refilling of ER Ca2+ in vascular endothelial cells under various conditions of cell stimulation and plasma membrane polarization. [Pflugers Arch] Full Article Radiolabeling of VEGF165 with 99mTc to Evaluate VEGFR Expression in Tumor Angiogenesis Scientists radiolabeled the human vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)165 analogue with 99mTechnetium (99mTc) and evaluated the expression of VEGFR in both cancer and endothelial cells in the tumor microenvironment. 99mTc-VEGF showed in vitro binding to HUVEC cells and in vivo to xenograft tumors in mice. [Int J Oncol] Abstract Researchers examined the feasibility of tissue engineered cardiac pacemaker (TECP) fabricated from cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs)-derived pacemaking cells and vascularization of TECP fabricated from CPCs-derived pacemaking cells and endothelial progenitor cells in vitro and in vivo implantation. [Life Sci] Abstract The authors explored the effects of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors, imatinib, nilotinib and dasatinib, on vascular endothelial cells in vitro, and found that only nilotinib induced expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) by vascular endothelial cells. [Leuk Res] Abstract Researchers transferred monomeric, dimeric and wild type CXCL12 gene into endothelial progenitor cells via lentiviral vectors. They investigated endothelial progenitor cells function following the interaction of CXCL12/CXCR4 or CXCL12/CXCR7 and downstream signaling pathways. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract The authors expanded endothelial progenitor cells to obtain cells at different passages, and analyzed their cellular properties and angiogenic ability. In the process of expansion, no changes were observed in cell cobblestone-like morphology, apoptotic rate and telomere length. [Int J Mol Med] Abstract Increased Endothelial Progenitor Cell Number in Early Stage of Endometrial Cancer Investigators determined whether, in the blood circulation of women with early endometrial cancer, circulating endothelial cell and endothelial progenitor cell levels differ from those of healthy women of similar age. POLICY NEWSRevamped ‘Anti-Science’ Education Bills in United States Find Success State and local legislatures in the United States are experimenting with new ways to target the topics taught in science classes, and it seems to be paying dividends. Florida’s legislature approved a bill that would enable residents to challenge what educators teach students. [Nature News] Editorial China Cracks Down on Fake Data in Drug Trials Those who submit faked clinical trial data might now go to jail — and in extreme circumstances, be executed — under a new interpretation of China’s criminal code. The policy shift is one of a handful of measures that China is implementing both to speed up its notoriously slow drug-approval process and to keep dangerous and ineffective drugs off the market.
