    TOP STORY
Derivation of Blood-Brain Barrier Endothelial Cells from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells
Researchers showed that endothelial cells derived from human pluripotent stem cells acquire blood-brain barrier properties when co-differentiated with neural cells that provide relevant cues, including those involved in Wnt/ß-catenin signaling. [Nat Biotechnol] Abstract | Press Release

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)

Derivation and Propagation of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines from Frozen Embryos in an Animal Product-Free Environment
The protocols described are comprehensive instructions for deriving human embryonic stem cell lines in xeno-free conditions from cryopreserved embryos. [Nat Protoc] Abstract

Global Identification of Transcriptional Regulators of Pluripotency and Differentiation in Embryonic Stem Cells
Investigators proposed a systematic approach to integrate genomic and epigenomic data for identification of direct regulatory interactions. This approach allows reconstruction of cell-type-specific transcription networks in embryonic stem cells and fibroblasts at an unprecedented scale. [Nucleic Acids Res] Full Article

Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Can Reach Complete Terminal Maturation: In Vivo and In Vitro Evidence in the Erythropoietic Differentiation Model
Researchers demonstrated that human induced pluripotent stem cells can achieve complete terminal erythroid maturation and open the way to generation of functionally corrected red blood cells from sickle cell disease induced pluripotent stem cells, without any genetic modification or drug treatment. [Haematologica]

Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells Support Non-Tumorigenic Expansion of Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Researchers tested human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells as the feeder for human embryonic stem cells. [Cell Transplant] Abstract

Programming of Regulatory T Cells from Pluripotent Stem Cells and Prevention of Autoimmunity
Investigators showed how to generate functional regulatory T (Treg) cells from induced pluripotent stem cells and to determine the potential role of such cells for Treg cell-based immunotherapy against autoimmunity in a therapeutic setting. [J Immunol] Abstract

Efficient Engineering of Vascularized Ectopic Bone from Human Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists have developed efficient and reproducible directed differentiation systems toward human mesenchymal stem cells from human embryonic stem cells, including co-culture with murine OP9 stromal cells and feeder layer-free. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Bisphenol A Modulates Germ Cell Differentiation and Retinoic Acid Signaling in Mouse ES Cells
Researchers investigated the effect of bisphenol A using in vitro differentiation of embryonic stem (ES) cells focusing on the expression of germ cell marker genes. [Reprod Toxicol] Abstract

Trim71 Cooperates with MicroRNAs to Repress Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitor 1a Expression and Promote Embryonic Stem Cell Proliferation
Scientists demonstrated that tripartite motif-containing protein 71 (Trim71) is a factor that facilitates the G1-S transition to promote rapid embryonic stem cell self-renewal. [Nat Commun] Abstract

    POLICY NEWS

U.K. Panel Backs Open Access for All Publicly Funded Research Papers
A long-awaited government report in the United Kingdom says open access journals should be “the main vehicle for the publication of research.” But it warns that such a move would cost the United Kingdom more than $80 million per year in publication charges and other costs. [The Working Group on Expanding Access to Published Research Findings, United Kingdom] Press Release

A Bigger E.U. Research Budget? Don’t Count On It Yet
European researchers should be cautious about their hopes for a big budget boost under Horizon 2020. Financial constraints among E.U. member states could shrink the proposed €80 billion budget to €60 billion or even less. [European Association of Research and Technology Organisations, European Union]
