    TOP STORY

Harnessing Traction-Mediated Manipulation of the Cell/Matrix Interface to Control Stem-Cell Fate
The findings suggest that cells interpret changes in the physical properties of adhesion substrates as changes in adhesion-ligand presentation, and that cells themselves can be harnessed as tools to mechanically process materials into structures that feed back to manipulate their fate. SCIENCE NEWS

Acellular Dermal Matrix and Short Bowel Syndrome
Researchers evaluated the efficacy of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for intestinal elongation in an animal model. It seemed that ADM was not suited to using alone as a scaffold for the intestinal elongation. [Press release from PhysOrg discussing online prepublication in World Journal of Gastroenterology]

    CURRENT PUBLICATIONS

Dendrite Reshaping of Adult Drosophila Sensory Neurons Requires Matrix Metalloproteinase-Mediated Modification of the Basement Membranes
The findings suggest that regulated proteolytic alteration of the extracellular matrix microenvironment might be a fundamental mechanism to drive a large-scale change of dendritic structures during reorganization of neuronal circuits. [Dev Cell]

Significant Type I and Type III Collagen Production from Human Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts in 3D Peptide Scaffolds without Extra Growth Factors
Researchers report the development of two peptide scaffolds designed for periodontal ligament fibroblasts. The scaffolds consist of one of the pure self-assembling peptide scaffolds RADA16 through direct coupling to short biologically active motifs. [PLoS One]

Direct Activation of Emmprin and Associated Pathogenesis by an Oncogenic Herpesvirus
Investigators used primary human fibroblasts and endothelial cells to determine whether Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) itself regulates extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (emmprin) expression, and whether KSHV-emmprin interactions mediate cell invasiveness. [Cancer Res]

Carcinoma-Associated Fibroblasts Promoted Tumor Spheroid Invasion on a Microfluidic 3D Co-Culture Device
Researchers present a microfluidic-based 3D co-culture device to reconstruct an in vitro tumor microenvironment and firstly investigate the effect of carcinoma-assisted fibroblasts on cancer cell invasion in 3D matrix. [Lab Chip]

The Effect of Scaffold Composition on the Early Structural Characteristics of Chondrocytes and Expression of Adhesion Molecules
Chondrocytes respond to biomaterials early after implantation by altering ultrastructural characteristics and expression of CD44 and integrin beta1. [Biomaterials]

A Comparison of the Influence of Material on In Vitro Cartilage Tissue Engineering with PCL, PGS, and POC 3D Scaffold Architecture Seeded with Chondrocytes
The goal of this study was to determine material effects on cartilage regeneration for scaffolds with the same controlled architecture. The 3D polycaprolactone (PCL), poly (glycerol sebacate) (PGS), and poly (1,8 octanediol-co-citrate) (POC) scaffolds of the same design were physically characterized and tissue regeneration in terms of cell phenotype, cellular proliferation and differentiation, and matrix production were compared to find which material would be most optimal for cartilage regeneration in vitro. [Biomaterials]

Chitosan-Alginate 3D Scaffolds as a Mimic of the Glioma Tumor Microenvironment
Here researchers report on the use of a three-dimensional (3D) chitosan-alginate (CA) scaffold to serve as an extracellular matrix that promotes the conversion of cultured cancer cells to a more malignant in vivo-like phenotype. [Biomaterials]

Extracellular DNA: A Major Proinflammatory Component of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilms
Because extracellular DNA is a key component of biofilms of different bacterial species, the aim of this study was to determine whether it plays a role in the ability of biofilms to induce human neutrophil activation. [J Immunol]

Repair of Traumatic Skeletal Muscle Injury with Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Seeded on Extracellular Matrix
The data suggest that the repair of a skeletal muscle defect injury by the implantation of a muscle-derived extracellular matrix seeded with mesenchymal stem cells can improve functional recovery after 42 days. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Application of Acellular Dermal Matrix for Intestinal Elongation in Animal Models
Researchers investigated the efficacy of acellular dermal matrix for intestinal elongation in animal models. [World J Gastroenterol]
