CURRENT PUBLICATIONS Designed Biomaterials to Mimic the Mechanical Properties of Muscles Researchers show that these artificial elastomeric proteins can be photochemically crosslinked and cast into solid biomaterials. Researchers anticipate that these biomaterials will find applications in tissue engineering as scaffold and matrix for artificial muscles. [Nature] D-Amino Acids Trigger Biofilm Disassembly Researchers found that, before biofilm disassembly, Bacillus subtilis produced a factor that prevented biofilm formation and could break down existing biofilms. [Science] Targeted Vezf1-Null Mutation Impairs Vascular Structure Formation During Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation Together, these results suggest that Vezf1 is involved in early differentiation processes of the vasculature by regulating cell differentiation, proliferation, and extracellular matrix distribution and deposition. [Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol] Type IIB Procollagen NH2-Propeptide, PIIBNP, Induces Death of Tumor Cells via Interaction With Integrins Alpha(v)Beta(5) and Alpha(v)Beta(3) The NH(2)-propeptide is liberated into the extracellular matrix prior to deposition of the collagen fibrils. This peptide, called PIIBNP, adheres to and kills cells from chondrosarcoma, cervical and breast cancer cell lines via the integrins alpha(v)beta(5) and alpha(v)beta(3). [J Biol Chem] Transcriptional Regulation of Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 and Collagen1a2 Explains the Antifibrotic Effect Exerted by Proteasome Inhibition in Human Dermal Fibroblasts By altering the binding of at least two transcription factors, c-Jun and SP1, proteasome inhibition results in increased production of matrix metalloproteinase-1 and decreased synthesis of type I collagen in human dermal fibroblasts. [ Arthritis Res Ther] Extracellular Matrix Suppresses Expression of the Apoptosis Mediator Fas by Epigenetic DNA Methylation Researchers demonstrate that the extracellular matrix prevents activation of Fas by epigenetic DNA-methylation. [Apoptosis] Hydrogel Matrix to Support Stem Cell Survival After Brain Transplantation in Stroke A biopolymer hydrogel composed of cross-linked hyaluronan and heparin sulfate significantly promoted the survival of two different neural progenitor cell lines in vitro in conditions of stress and in vivo into the infarct cavity. [Neurorehabil Neural Repair] Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Matrix Prohibits Metastatic Cancer Cell MDA-MB-231 Proliferation Researchers demonstrate that the extracellular matrix produced by umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells was able to arrest the growth of metastatic tumor cells by upregulating levels of PTEN in aggressive cancer cells. [Cancer Lett] Targeted In Vivo Extracellular Matrix Formation Promotes Neovascularization in a Rodent Model of Myocardial Infarction Researchers investigated whether extracellular matrix protein fragments could be targeted with antibodies to ischemically injured myocardium to promote angiogenesis and myocardial repair. [PLoS One] Sec24D-Dependent Transport of Extracellular Matrix Proteins Is Required for Zebrafish Skeletal Morphogenesis Researchers show that Sec24D is essential for secretion of cartilage matrix proteins, whereas the preceding development of craniofacial primordia and pre-chondrogenic condensations does not depend on this isoform. Bulldog chondrocytes fail to secrete type II collagen and matrilin to extracellular matrix, but membrane bound receptor beta1-integrin and cadherins appear to leave the endoplasmic reticulum in Sec24D-independent fashion.
