    TOP STORY

The Role of Engineered Tendon Matrix in the Stemness of Tendon Stem Cells In Vitro and the Promotion of Tendon-like Tissue Formation In Vivo
In this study, researchers developed a substrate material for tendon stem cells (TSCs), engineered tendon matrix (ETM) from decellularized tendon tissues. The findings of this study indicate that ETM may be used to effectively expand TSCs in vitro and with TSCs, to enhance repair of injured tendons in vivo. [Biomaterials]

    SCIENCE NEWS

Astrocytes Appear to Play an Important Role in Brain Tumors
In a current study using animal models, scientists demonstrated that tumor cells that rapidly infiltrate tissue influence the molecular composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) differently than those that are less invasive. The researchers suspect that the change in behavior of the ECM may be due to the influence of tumor stem cells. [Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch Press Release]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

The Promotion of Neural Progenitor Cells Proliferation by Aligned and Randomly Oriented Collagen Nanofibers through β1 Integrin/MAPK Signaling Pathway
This study aimed to explore the mechanism how nanofibrous scaffold modulated stem cells behavior. [Biomaterials]

Inhibition of Matrix Metalloproteinases Prevents the Potentiation of Nondeprived-Eye Responses after Monocular Deprivation in Juvenile Rats
Researchers investigated the effects of matrix metalloproteinase inhibition on ocular dominance plasticity in juvenile monocularly deprived rats. [Cereb Cortex]

The Role of the Extracellular Matrix Protein Mindin in Airway Response to Environmental Airways Injury
The data demonstrates that the extracellular matrix protein mindin modifies the airway response to both LPS and ozone. [Environ Health Perspect]

Dentin Matrix Protein 1 (DMP1) Signals via Cell Surface Integrin
Researchers examined DMP1’s ability to engage cell-surface receptors and subsequently activate intracellular signaling pathways. [J Biol Chem]

    Stem Cell-Based Meniscus Tissue Engineering
A multiporous, multilamellar meniscus was formed using silk protein scaffolds and stem cells. The silk scaffolds were seeded with human bone marrow stem cells and differentiated over time in chondrogenic culture in the presence of transforming growth factor-beta to generate meniscus-like tissue in vitro. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Biochemical and Functional Characterization of the Interaction between Liprin-α1 and GIT1: Implications for the Regulation of Cell Motility
The findings show that the functional interaction between liprin-α1 and GIT1 cooperate in the regulation of integrin-dependent cell spreading and motility on extracellular matrix. [PLoS ONE]

Visualizing Cell Extracellular Matrix (ECM) Deposited by Cells Cultured on Aligned Bacteriophage M13 Thin Films
Here, researchers further study the nanometer topographical features generated by the bacteriophage M13 crystalline film, which results in the alignment of the cells and ECM proteins. [Langmuir]

Proteolysis of the Matricellular Protein Hevin by Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) Produces a SPARC-Like Fragment (SLF) Associated with Neovasculature in a Murine Glioma Model
Researchers conclude that MMP-3-derived SLF is a marker of neovessels in glioma, where it could influence the activity of SPARC. [J Cell Biochem]

A Novel Three-Dimensional Culture System Uncovers Growth Stimulatory Actions by TGF-β in Pancreatic Cancer Cells
Since the tumor microenvironment can affect how cancer cells respond to TGF-β, researchers employed a novel three-dimensional (3D) culturing system to recapitulate stromal and extracellular matrix interactions. [Cancer Biol Ther]

Guided Orientation of Cardiomyocytes on Electrospun Aligned Nanofibers for Cardiac Tissue Engineering
In this study, random and aligned poly(ε-caprolactone)/gelatin (PG) composite nanofibrous scaffolds were electrospun to structurally mimic the oriented extracellular matrix. [J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater]
