    TOP STORY
A FAK-Cas-Rac-Lamellipodin Signaling Module Transduces Extracellular Matrix Stiffness into Mechanosensitive Cell Cycling
Scientists found that a pathway consisting of focal adhesion kinase (FAK), the adaptor protein p130Cas (Cas), and the guanosine triphosphatase Rac selectively transduced extracellular matrix stiffness into stable intracellular stiffness, increased the abundance of the cell cycle protein cyclin D1, and promoted S-phase entry. [Sci Signal] Abstract

Collagen Nanofibers Facilitated Pre-Synaptic Maturation in Differentiated Neurons from Spinal Cord-Derived Neural Stem Cells through MAPK/ERK1/2- Synapsin I Signaling Pathway
Researchers investigated the role of nanofibrous scaffolds on neural stem cells-derived neurons in the formation of neural network. [Biomacromolecules] Abstract

RNA Sequencing of Creatine Transporter (SLC6A8) Deficient Fibroblasts Reveals Impairment of the Extracellular Matrix
Differential gene expression analysis followed by gene ontology term enrichment analysis revealed that especially the expression of genes encoding components of the extracellular matrix and cytoskeleton are altered in SLC6A8 deficiency, such as collagens, keratins, integrins, and cadherins. [Hum Mutat] Abstract

Glycosylation Modulates Melanoma Cell α2β1 and α3β1 Integrin Interactions with Type IV Collagen
The galactosylation of Hyl393 in α1(IV)382-393 and Hyl540 and Hyl543 in α1(IV)531-543 had a dose dependent influence on melanoma cell adhesion which was much more pronounced in the case of α3β1 integrin binding. [J Biol Chem] Abstract | Full Article

Glycosylation and Cross-Linking in Bone Type I Collagen
Researchers quantitatively characterized glycosylation of non-cross-linked and cross-linked peptides by biochemical and nanoscale liquid chromatography – high resolution tandem mass spectrometric analyses. [J Biol Chem] Abstract | Full Article

Glycated Collagen Induces α11 Integrin Expression through TGF-β2 and Smad3
Researchers examined how methylglyoxal-glycated collagen regulates α11 integrin expression. In cardiac fibroblasts plated on glycated collagen but not glycated fibronectin, there was markedly increased α11 integrin and α-smooth muscle actin expression. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

The Regulation of TGFβ1 Induced Fibronectin EDA Exon Alternative Splicing in Human Renal Proximal Tubule Epithelial Cells
Scientists investigated cellular mechanisms of EDA+ fibronectin production in human primary proximal tubule epithelial cells. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

LL-37 Secreted by Epithelium Promotes Fibroblast Collagen Production: A Potential Mechanism of Small Airway Remodeling in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
In vitro, the effect of CSE-induced epithelial secretion of LL-37 on collagen production in human lung fibroblasts was studied in a co-culture system. The signaling pathways involved in the effect of LL-37 on fibroblast collagen production were evaluated. [Lab Invest] Abstract

Synthesis of Functionalized Poly(Ester Carbonate) with Laminin-Derived Peptide for Promoting Neurite Outgrowth of PC12 cells
In vitro culture of PC12 cells showed that maleimide-functionalized polymers, especially CQAASIKVAV-grafted ones, could support cell proliferation and neurite outgrowth. [Macromol Biosci] Abstract

Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Is Involved in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Cell Response to Fludarabine and Arsenic Trioxide
It is not known if matrix metalloproteinase-9 is involved in chronic lymphocytic leukemia cell response to chemotherapy and scientists address this in the present study, using arsenic trioxide and fludarabine as examples of cytotoxic drugs. [PLoS One] Full Article

Perfluorooctanoic Acid Stimulates Breast Cancer Cells Invasion and Up-Regulates Matrix Metalloproteinase-2/-9 Expression Mediated by Activating NF-κB
Researchers explored the molecular mechanisms undergoing the stimulation effects of perfluorooctanoic acid on cancer cell invasion and matrix metalloproteinases expression. [Toxicol Lett] Abstract

    REVIEWS
The Nuclear Lamina Is Mechano-Responsive to ECM Elasticity in Mature Tissue
The authors summarize the signaling pathways that regulate lamin levels and cell-fate decisions in response to a combination of extracellular matrix (ECM) mechanics and molecular cues. [J Cell Sci] Abstract

Fibrin in Intervertebral Disc Tissue Engineering
The authors evaluate how fibrin has been used in vitro, in vivo and in clinical trials for intervertebral disc tissue engineering. Within the in vitro studies, disc cells were cultured in fibrin alone or combined with other materials and a difference in the behavior of nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus cells was sometimes reported, but, in general, the formation of fibrocartilaginous matrix was observed. [Tissue Eng Part B Rev] Abstract
