Long-Term Controlled Delivery of rhBMP-2 from Collagen-Hydroxyapatite Scaffolds for Superior Bone Tissue Regeneration
Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) was combined with a collagen-hydroxyapatite (CHA) scaffold to produce a highly porous CHA scaffold supporting the controlled release of the protein over the course of 21 days whilst maintaining in vitro bioactivity as demonstrated by enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium production by preosteoblasts cultured on the scaffold. [J Control Release] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Delineation of In Vitro Chondrogenesis of Human Synovial Stem Cells following Preconditioning Using Decellularized Matrix
Investigators found that expansion on decellularized extracellular matrix full of three-dimensional nanostructured fibers provided synovium-derived stem cells with unique surface profiles, low elasticity but large volume as well as a fibroblast-like shape. [Acta Biomater] Abstract

Loss of CD147 Results in Impaired Epithelial Cell Differentiation and Malformation of the Meibomian Gland
Scientists identified a novel function for CD147, a transmembrane protein that promotes tissue remodeling through induction of matrix metalloproteinases, in regulating meibocyte differentiation and activity. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

Influence of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Stimulation and Serum Deprivation on Gene Activation Patterns of Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Stromal Cells
Researchers investigated the effect of in vitro serum deprivation and vascular endothelial growth factor stimulation on gene expression patterns of adipose tissue-derived stromal cells. [Stem Cell Res Ther]

Collagen and Elastin Cross-Linking Is Altered during Aberrant Late Lung Development Associated with Hyperoxia
Scientists demonstrated that collagen and elastin cross-linking are perturbed during the arrested alveolarization of developing mouse lungs exposed to hyperoxia. [Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol] Abstract

High-Mobility Group Box 1 Accelerates Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Lung Fibroblast Proliferation In Vitro: Involvement of the NF-κB Signaling Pathway
Researchers investigated the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- and/or high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1)-stimulating murine lung fibroblasts on gene expression using various assays in vitro. Secretion of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 2 was significantly upregulated after treatment with LPS, HMGB1, or their combination. [Lab Invest] Abstract

Periodontal Regeneration Employing Gingival Margin-Derived Stem/Progenitor Cells in Conjunction with IL-1ra-Hydrogel Synthetic Extracellular Matrix
Scientists investigated the periodontal regenerative potential of gingival margin-derived stem/progenitor cells in conjunction with IL-1ra releasing hyaluronic acid synthetic extracellular matrix [J Clin Periodontol] Abstract

Colorectal Cancer Metastases Settle in the Hepatic Microenvironment Through α5β1 Integrin
Researchers investigated the role of α5β1 integrin and how the microenvironment influences this adhesion molecule, in a model of colon cancer progression to the liver. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

No Effects of Hyperosmolar Culture Medium on Tissue Regeneration by Human Degenerated Nucleus Pulposus Cells despite Upregulation Extracellular Matrix Genes
Investigators determined the effect of osmolality and different osmolytes on the regeneration by human nucleus pulposus cells through gene expression and extracellular matrix production. [Spine] Abstract

What Understanding Tendon Cell Differentiation Can Teach Us about Pathological Tendon Ossification
The authors present chronic tendon pathologies associated with abnormal ossification. They moreover present the factors known to influence tendon cell differentiation and trans-differentiation, with a particular emphasis on extracellular environment, mechanical stimulation and several soluble factors that can tip the balance toward one or another lineage. [Histol Histopathol] Abstract
