Donor Activating KIR3DS1 is Associated with Decreased Acute Graft-Versus-Host Disease in Unrelated Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
The natural killer cell receptor KIR3DS1 is associated with improved outcome in malignancies, infections, and autoimmune diseases, but data for the impact of KIR3DS1 in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are inconsistent. Using genomic DNA from the National Marrow Donor Program, researchers performed donor KIR genotyping for 1087 patients who received an unrelated HSCT. [Blood]

    LABORATORY RESEARCH

Adult T Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma Development in HTLV-1-Infected Humanized SCID Mice
HTLV-1 infected humanized NOD/SCID mice were generated by inoculation of NOD/SCID mice with CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor and stem cells infected ex vivo with HTLV-1. [Blood]

Relapse of Leukemia with Loss of Mismatched HLA due to Uniparental Disomy Following Haploidentical Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Researchers investigated HLA expression on leukemic cells derived from patients at diagnosis and relapse after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation using flow cytometry with locus-specific antibodies. [Blood]

    Leukemogenic Transformation by HOXA-Cluster Genes
Here, researchers performed a comprehensive assessment of the oncogenic potential of every HOXA gene in primary hematopoietic cells. [Blood]

Gfi-1B Controls Human Erythroid and Megakaryocytic Differentiation by Regulating Transforming Growth Factor(beta) Signaling at the Bipotent Erythro-Megakaryocytic Progenitor Stage
In humans, Gfi-1B controls the development of erythrocytes and megakaryocytes by regulating the proliferation and differentiation of bipotent erythro-megakaryocytic progenitors. Researchers further identify in this cell population, the type III transforming growth factor-beta receptor gene, TGFBR3, as a direct target of Gfi-1B. [Blood]

Aberrant Overexpression and Function of the miR-17-92 Cluster in Mixed Lineage Leukemia-Rearranged Acute Leukemia
Researchers have found that microRNA-17-92 cluster (miR-17-92) is frequently amplified and the miRNAs are aberrantly overexpressed in mixed lineage leukemia-rearranged acute leukemias. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A]

Cutting Edge: Bacterial Infection Induces Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cell Expansion in the Absence of Toll-Like Receptor Signaling
Researchers report that endotoxin treatment in vivo induces TLR4, MyD88, and Toll/IL-1 resistance domain-containing adaptor-inducing IFN-beta-dependent expansion of bone marrow hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. [J Immunol]

Myeloid Translocation Gene-16 Interacts with Notch Transcription Complex Components to Integrate Notch Signaling in Hematopoietic Cell Fate Specification
Researchers show that the transcriptional co-repressor, MTG16, interacts with CSL, a transcriptional repressor, and the intracellular domains of Notch receptors, suggesting a pivotal role in regulation of the Notch transcription complex. [Mol Cell Biol]

    CLINICAL RESEARCH

Long-Term Outcome and Late Effects in Patients Transplanted with Mobilised Blood or Bone Marrow: a Randomised Trial
Long-term data on outcome and late effects of peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation (PBPCT) compared with bone marrow transplantation (BMT) are scarce. Here, researchers present long-term data from a randomised study comparing PBPCT with BMT. [Lancet Oncol]

Risk Factors for Fungal Pulmonary Infections in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Recipients: The Role of Iron Overload
The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors of fungal pulmonary infections due to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. [Bone Marrow Transplant]

Post-Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Immunization Practices in the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium
Researchers surveyed the principal investigators of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium to identify immunization practice patterns after hematopoietic stem cell transplant and assess compliance with the 2000 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
