CURRENT PUBLICATIONS HIV-1 Infects Multipotent Progenitor Cells Causing Cell Death and Establishing Latent Cellular Reservoirs Here researchers used CD34+ cells from infected people as well as in vitro studies of wild-type HIV to show infection and killing of CD34+ multipotent hematopoietic progenitor cells. [Nat Med] Vitamin D Controls T Cell Antigen Receptor Signaling and Activation of Human T Cells Researchers show that naive human T cells had very low expression of PLC-gamma1 and that this correlated with low T cell antigen receptor responsiveness in naive T cells. [Nat Immunol] Regulation of Leukocyte Recruitment by the Long Pentraxin PTX3 PTX3, which is an essential component of humoral innate immunity, and immunoglobulins share functional outputs, including complement activation, opsonization and, as shown in this study, glycosylation-dependent regulation of inflammation. [ Nat Immunol] Single Round of Antigen Receptor Signaling Programs Naive B Cells to Receive T Cell Help To simulate transient B cell activation that is the likely initiator of T-dependent responses, researchers examined the molecular and functional consequences of a single round of immunoglobulin M (IgM) signaling. [Immunity] CD81 Gene Defect in Humans Disrupts CD19 Complex Formation and Leads to Antibody Deficiency In this study, researchers present what they believe to be the first antibody deficiency syndrome caused by a mutation in the CD81 gene and consequent disruption of the CD19 complex on B cells. [J Clin Invest] Membrane Nanotubes Facilitate Long-Distance Interactions between Natural Killer Cells and Target Cells Nanotubes allow human natural killer cells to interact functionally with target cells over long distances. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Toxin-Coupled MHC Class I Tetramers Can Specifically Ablate Autoreactive CD8+ T Cells and Delay Diabetes in Nonobese Diabetic Mice Researchers show that saporin-coupled tetramers can delete islet-specific glucose-6-phosphatase catalytic subunit-related protein-reactive T cells in vitro and in vivo. [J Immunol] Uncoordinated 119 Preferentially Induces Th2 Differentiation and Promotes the Development of Asthma Using adoptive transfer of signalling protein uncoordinated 119 (Unc119)-knockdown CD4 T cells, researchers show a critical role for Unc119 in the development of eosinophilic inflammation of airways, mucus production, and bronchial hyperreactivity in a mouse model. [J Immunol] T Cell Ig Domain and Mucin Domain 1 Engagement on Invariant NKT Cells in the Presence of TCR Stimulation Enhances IL-4 Production but Inhibits IFN-Gamma Production The results suggest that T cell Ig domain and mucin domain1 (TIM1) costimulation on natural killer T (NKT) cells enhances the cellular production of IL-4 while inhibiting the production of IFN-gamma.
