How Cannabis Suppresses Immune Functions: Cannabis Compounds Found to Trigger Unique Immune Cells Which Promote Cancer Growth
An international team of immunologists studying the effects of cannabis have discovered how smoking marijuana can trigger a suppression of the body’s immune functions. The research reveals why cannabis users are more susceptible to certain types of cancers and infections. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing online prepublication in the European Journal of Immunology]

Abortive HIV Infection Mediates CD4 T Cell Depletion and Inflammation in Human Lymphoid Tissue
In ex vivo cultures of human tonsil tissue, CD4 T cells undergo a pronounced cytopathic response following HIV infection. Strikingly, >95% of these dying cells are not productively infected but instead correspond to bystander cells. Researchers now show that the death of these “bystander” cells involves abortive HIV infection. [Cell]

Mzb1 Protein Regulates Calcium Homeostasis, Antibody Secretion, and Integrin Activation in Innate-Like B Cells
Marginal zone (MZ) B cells of the spleen and B1 cells, termed innate-like B cells, differ from follicular B cells by their attenuated Ca2+ mobilization, fast antibody secretion, and increased cell adhesion. Researchers identified and characterized Mzb1 as an endoplasmic reticulum-localized and B cell-specific protein that was most abundantly expressed in MZ B and B1 cells. [Immunity]

Endogenous Cortisol and TGF-Beta in Human Aqueous Humor Contribute to Ocular Immune Privilege by Regulating Dendritic Cell Function
Aqueous humor (AqH) has been shown to have significant immunosuppressive effects on APCs in animal models. Researchers wanted to establish whether, in humans, AqH can regulate dendritic cell function and to identify the dominant mechanism involved. [J Immunol]

Distinct Roles for the NK Cell-Activating Receptors in Mediating Interactions with Dendritic Cells and Tumor Cells
This study investigates the interaction of NK cells with dendritic cells and tumor cells, and the role of specific NK cell-activating receptors in this process. [J Immunol]

Cannabinoid Receptor Activation Leads to Massive Mobilization of Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells with Potent Immunosuppressive Properties
Here, researchers show that administration of delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol in mice leads to rapid and massive expansion of CD11b(+)Gr-1(+) myeloid-derived suppressor cells expressing functional arginase and exhibiting potent immunosuppressive properties both in vitro and in vivo. [Eur J Immunol]

Regulatory T Cells Predict the Time to Initial Treatment in Early Stage Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Higher regulatory T cell levels had significant and independent prognostic power for predicting the time to initial treatment in patients with low to intermediate stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia. [Cancer]

Overrepresentation of IL-17A and IL-22 Producing CD8 T Cells in Lesional Skin Suggests Their Involvement in the Pathogenesis of Psoriasis
By spectral imaging analysis of double-stained skin sections researchers demonstrated that IL-17 was mainly expressed by mast cells and neutrophils and IL-22 by macrophages and dendritic cells. [PLoS ONE]

The Canonical BMP Signaling Pathway is Involved in Human Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cell Maturation
In this study, researchers investigate the effects of bone morphogenetic protein signaling activation on the capacity of human dendritic cells to stimulate immune responses. [Immunol Cell Biol]
