CD147 Contributes to SARS-CoV-2-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis

Investigators systemically analyzed lung pathogenesis in SARS-CoV-2- and its delta variant-infected humanized CD147 transgenic mice. Histopathology and Transmission Electron Microscopy revealed inflammation, fibroblast expansion and pronounced fibrotic remodeling in SARS-CoV-2-infected lungs.

The SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein Binds and Modulates Estrogen Receptors

The authors profiled binding of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (S) against >9000 human proteins, and found an interaction between S and human estrogen receptor α (ERα). In cultured cells, S DNA transfection increased ERα cytoplasmic accumulation, and S treatment induced ER-dependent biological effects.

High Antibody Levels and Reduced Cellular Response in Children up to One Year After SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Four months after infection, children showed an enhanced specific antibody response and lower but detectable spike 1 protein (S1)-specific B and T cell responses, compared to their parents. One year after infection, an increase in the S1-specific IgA class switched, and the expression of CD27 on S1-specific B cells and T cell maturation were observed.

Epigenetic and Transcriptomic Reprogramming in Monocytes of Severe COVID-19 Patients Reflects Alterations in Myeloid Differentiation and the Influence of Inflammatory Cytokines

DNA samples extracted from CD14+ CD15 monocytes of 48 severe COVID-19 patients and 11 healthy controls were hybridized on MethylationEPIC BeadChip arrays, and CellPhoneDB was used to infer changes in the crosstalk between monocytes and other immune cell types.

Single-Cell RNA-Sequencing Data Analysis Reveals a Highly Correlated Triphasic Transcriptional Response to SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Scientists performed a pseudotime analysis of SARS-CoV-2 infection using publicly available scRNA-seq data from human bronchial epithelial cells and colon and ileum organoids.

Structural Characterization of Protective Non-neutralizing Antibodies Targeting Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus

Researchers revealed the structures of GP38 bound with a human chimeric 13G8 mouse monoclonal antibody (mAb), and a newly isolated CC5-17 mAb from a human survivor. The broad-spectrum potential of c13G8 and CC5-17 and the practicality of using them against Aigai virus were examined.

Induction of Cross-Neutralizing Antibodies by a Permuted Hepatitis C Virus Glycoprotein Nanoparticle Vaccine Candidate

Most recombinant Hepatitis C virus glycoprotein vaccines, which usually include only E2, induce only weak neutralizing antibody responses. Therefore, investigators described recombinant soluble E1E2 immunogens that were generated by permutation of the E1 and E2 subunits.

A Highly Immunogenic Vaccine Platform Against Encapsulated Pathogens Using Chimeric Probiotic Escherichia coli Membrane Vesicles

The authors constructed a probiotic E. coli clone harboring the genetic locus responsible for biogenesis of serotype 14 pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides as a model antigen.

Inflammasome Activation and CCR2-Mediated Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cell Recruitment Restrict Legionella pneumophila Infection

Investigators found temporal coordination of two independent innate immunity pathways in controlling Legionella pneumophila infection: inflammasome activation, and CCR2-mediated monocyte-derived dendritic cell recruitment.

CD4+IL9+ (Th9) Cells as the Major Source of IL-9, Potentially Modulate Th17/Treg Mediated Host Immune Response during Experimental Cerebral Malaria

Scientists explored the potential roles of Th9 cells in the immunopathogenesis of experimental cerebral malaria. In splenocytes sourced from uninfected, PbA and Py infected mice, Th9 cells were characterised by flow cytometry, cell sorting, and qPCR.

Indictment of Monkey Importers Could Disrupt US Drug and Vaccine Research

The US Department of Justice charged two Cambodian wildlife officials and several members of a Hong Kong-based primate supply company with illegally exporting hundreds—and potentially more than 2000— cynomolgus macaques, an endangered species, to the United States for research.
