PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)LABORATORY RESEARCHUsing integrated genomic and functional studies, scientists report that amplification and/or overexpression of COPS5 confers resistance to tamoxifen. [Nat Commun] Full Article Researchers experimentally validate that loss of Stratifin promotes HER2-induced tumorigenesis in human cells. Their results demonstrate the power of genetically engineered mouse model copy-number alteration analysis to inform the pathogenesis of human cancer. [Nat Commun] Full Article Hormone‐Induced Repression of Genes Requires BRG1‐Mediated H1.2 Deposition at Target Promoters The authors report that in breast cancer cells, ligand‐activated progesterone receptor is directly recruited to transcriptionally repressed genes involved in cell proliferation along with the kinases ERK1/2 and MSK1. [EMBO J] Abstract | Graphical Abstract | Press Release Inhibition of DNA Methylation Promotes Breast Tumor Sensitivity to Netrin-1 Interference Scientists showed that a substantial fraction of human breast tumors exhibits simultaneous DNA methylation-dependent loss of expression of NTN1 and of DAPK1, a serine threonine kinase known to transduce the netrin-1 dependence receptor pro-apoptotic pathway. [EMBO Mol Med] Full Article Employing a lung metastasis model of murine breast cancer, the authors found that tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα)-activated mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) strikingly enhanced tumor metastasis compared with normal MSCs. [Oncogene] Full Article Investigators showed that the dietary phytochemical apigenin inhibited interferon-γ-induced programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) upregulation by triple-negative MDA-MB-468 BC cells, HER2M+ SK-BR-3 breast cancer (BC) cells, and 4T1 mouse mammary carcinoma cells, as well as human mammary epithelial cells, but did not affect constitutive PD-L1 expression by triple-negative MDA-MB-231 BC cells. [Cancer Lett] Abstract The effects of the stiffness of the microenvironment on the molecular response of 3D colony organization, at the maximum level of mammographic density, were investigated. [Sci Rep] Full Article Scientists investigated the potential of regorafenib to suppress metastasis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells through targeting SHP-1/p-STAT3/VEGF-A axis. They found a significant correlation between cancer cell migration and SHP-1/p-STAT3/VEGF-A expression in human TNBC cells. [Sci Rep] Full Article The expression of microRNA (miR)-145 in human triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells and samples from 30 patients was analyzed by stem-loop real-time PCR. Researchers found that miR-145 was significantly downregulated in TNBC tissues and cells. [Cancer Gene Ther] Abstract CLINICAL RESEARCHThe purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic and predictive value of TILs in the triple-negative breast cancer cohort of the Phase III IBCSG trial 22-00, comparing low-dose oral ‘metronomic’ cyclophosphamide-methotrexate maintenance chemotherapy (CM-maintenance) to no-CM-maintenance in early breast cancer. REVIEWSMultifaceted Breast Cancer: The Molecular Connection with Obesity The authors describe how adipose inflammation that characterizes obesity is responsible of microenvironment to promote cancer, and discuss how steroid hormones, that are essential for the maintenance of the normal development, growth and differentiation of the cells, influence the induction and progression of breast cancer. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract Visit our reviews page to see a complete list of reviews in the mammary cell research field.

INDUSTRY NEWSElsevier Launches PracticeUpdate Metastatic Breast Cancer Center of Excellence Elsevier announced that it has launched its newest PracticeUpdate Center of Excellence (COE) focused on metastatic breast cancer. The COE, an important new benefit for PracticeUpdate members, brings together medical experts in oncology to discuss and provide relevant treatment advice and disease information on metastatic breast cancer. [Elsevier] Press Release Puma Biotechnology, Inc. announced that it has submitted its Marketing Authorization Application to the European Medicines Agency for neratinib. The potential indication is for the extended adjuvant treatment of HER2-positive early stage breast cancer that has previously been treated with trastuzumab-based adjuvant therapy. [Puma Biotechnology] Press Release NCI Launches Largest-Ever Study of Breast Cancer Genetics in Black Women The largest study ever to investigate how genetic and biological factors contribute to breast cancer risk among black women launched. This collaborative research project will identify genetic factors that may underlie breast cancer disparities. The effort is funded by the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. [National Institute of Health/National Cancer Institute] Press Release | |

POLICY NEWSPolicy Implications of Aging in the NIH-Funded Workforce Because of national interest in the “graying” of the biomedical workforce, the authors examine aging and funding within the pool of NIH-funded investigators and applicants, particularly in the growing field of stem cell research. They provide evidence of a maturing and more competitive stem cell workforce and discuss policy implications. [Cell Stem Cell] Editorial
