    TOP STORY

Human Placenta-Derived Adherent Cells Prevent Bone Loss, Stimulate Bone Formation, and Suppress Growth of Multiple Myeloma in Bone
Placenta-derived adherent cells (PDAC) are mesenchymal-like stem cells isolated from postpartum human placenta. Researchers evaluated the antimyeloma therapeutic potential, in vivo survival, and trafficking of PDAC in the SCID-rab model of medullary myeloma-associated bone loss. [Stem Cells]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

A Dynamic Notch Injury Response Activates Epicardium and Contributes to Fibrosis Repair
Researchers asked whether, as in other tissues of this mouse, enhanced green fluorescent protein localized and functionally tagged adult cardiac tissue progenitors, and, if so, whether this cell-based signal could serve as a quantitative and qualitative biosensor of the injury repair response of the heart. [Circ Res]

VEGF-Expressing Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells, An Improved Therapy Strategy for Parkinson’s Disease
As both vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUMSCs) displayed limited neuroprotection, in this study researchers investigated whether HUMSCs combined with VEGF expression could offer enhanced neuroprotection. [Gene Ther]

Cartilage Tissue Engineering Using Electrospun PCL Nanofiber Meshes and MSCs
Adherent, colony-forming, fibroblastic cells were isolated from human bone marrow aspirates, from patients undergoing knee arthroplasties, and the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) phenotype characterized by flow cytometry. Afterward, cells were seeded onto electrospun polycaprolactone nanofiber meshes and cultured in a multichamber flow perfusion bioreactor to determine their ability to produce cartilagineous extracellular matrix. [Biomacromolecules]

Quantifying Osteogenic Cell Degradation of Silk Biomaterials
The degradation of silk protein films by human mesenchymal stem cells, osteoblasts and osteoclasts, cells involved in osteogenic functions in normal and diseased bone, was assessed in vitro. [Biomacromolecules]

Enhanced Proliferation and Chondrogenic Differentiation of Human Synovium-Derived Stem Cells Expanded with Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor
Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) was reported to augment the differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells originating from a variety of sources. In this study, researchers applied various concentrations of bFGF to monolayer cultures of synovium-derived stem cells and evaluated its effects on proliferation and chondrogenesis. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Osteogenic Media and rhBMP-2 Induced Differentiation of Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells Encapsulated in Alginate Microbeads and Integrated in an Injectable Calcium Phosphate-Chitosan Fibrous Scaffold
The objectives of this study are to: (1) Develop a novel human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUCMSC) encapsulating, fiber-reinforced injectable calcium phosphate cement (CPCF) scaffold; (2) investigate the effects of osteogenic media delivery, pre-osteodifferentiation, and BMP-2 delivery on hUCMSC osteodifferentiation inside CPCF for the first time. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Fibrocartilage Tissue Engineering: The Role of the Stress Environment on Cell Morphology and Matrix Expression
Mesenchymal stromal cells in a three-dimensional culture were exposed to compressive and tensile stresses as a result of an external tensile hydrostatic stress field. [Tissue Eng Part A]
