Mesenchymal Stem Cells Enhance Survival and Bacterial Clearance in Murine Escherichia coli Pneumonia
This study focused on testing the therapeutic and mechanistic effects of mesenchymal stem cells in a mouse model of gram-negative pneumonia. [Thorax] Abstract

Isolation of the Stromal-Vascular Fraction of Mouse Bone Marrow Markedly Enhances the Yield of Clonogenic Stromal Progenitors
The low incidence of CFU-F significantly complicates the isolation of homogeneous populations of mouse bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Researchers hypothesized that a potential reason for the low yield of mouse BMSCs is the flushing of the marrow used to remove single cells suspensions and the consequent destruction of the marrow vasculature, which may adversely affect recovery of BMSCs physically associated with the abluminal surface of blood vessels. [Blood] Abstract

Lateral Spacing of Adhesion Peptides Influences Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Behavior
Here scientists used surfaces of self-assembled maleimide-functionalized polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) copolymers to investigate how the spatial arrangement of cell adhesion ligands affects mesenchymal stem cell behavior. [J Cell Sci] Abstract

Soluble Molecules Are Key in Maintaining the Immunomodulatory Activity of Murine Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Here, researchers demonstrate that both immuno-privilege and immunosuppressive properties of mesenchymal stromal cells change with increasing passage. [J Cell Sci] Abstract

Ectopic Bone Regeneration by Human Bone Marrow Mononucleated Cells, Undifferentiated and Osteogenically Differentiated Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells in β-Tricalcium Phosphate Scaffolds
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of in vitro osteogenic differentiation (β-glycerophosphate, dexamethasone and L-ascorbic acid) of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells on the capability to form tissue-engineered bone in unloaded conditions after subcutaneous implantation in nude mice. [Tissue Eng Part C Methods] Abstract

Bone Marrow Stromal Cells Stimulate an Angiogenic Program that Requires Endothelial Membrane Type 1-Matrix Metalloproteinase
Using a three-dimensional, fibrin-based angiogenesis model, researchers sought to investigate the proteolytic mechanisms by which bone marrow-derived stromal/stem cells promote vessel morphogenesis. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

Suppression of Zinc Finger Protein 467 Alleviates Osteoporosis through Promoting Differentiation of Adipose Derived Stem Cells to Osteoblasts
In this study, a comparative analysis of gene expression profiling using cDNA microarray and realtime-PCR indicated that zinc finger protein 467 involved in adipocyte and osteoblast differentiation of cultured adipose derived stem cells. [J Transl Med] Abstract

Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Mitigate Chemotherapy-Associated Tissue Injury in a Pre-Clinical Mouse Model
Researchers treated murine Lewis lung carcinoma and xenograft human colon tumors with adriamycin for three consecutive days followed by one intravenous injection of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stromal cells for several cycles. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Fat Pad-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells as a Potential Source for Cell-Based Adipose Tissue Repair Strategies
Researchers have previously shown that mesenchymal stem cells derived from the fat pad can undergo chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation, and characterized these cells at early passage. In the study described here, proliferation potential and characterization of fat pad-derived mesenchymal stem cells were assessed at higher passages, and cells were allowed to undergo adipogenic differentiation. [Cell Prolif] Abstract
