    TOP STORY
Regulation of Differentiation Potential of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Intracytoplasmic Delivery of Coactivator-Associated Arginine Methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) Protein Using Cell-Penetrating Peptide (CPP)
Researchers have employed direct protein delivery of CARM1 using CPP to regulate the differentiation potential of human mesenchymal stem cells. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Nanostructured PEG-Based Hydrogels with Tunable Physical Properties for Gene Delivery to Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers synthesized biodegradable nanostructured hydrogels with tunable physical properties for cell and gene delivery. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Characterization of Different Subpopulations from Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells by Alkaline Phosphatase Expression
Scientists classified human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cell populations according to tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase activity. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Modulation of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Shape in Enzyme-Sensitive Hydrogels Is Decoupled from Upregulation of Fibroblast Markers under Cyclic Tension
Researchers investigated whether increased degradability of the biomaterial carrier would induce changes in mesenchymal stem cell morphology and subsequent upregulation of tendon/fibroblast markers under tensile strain. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Distinctive Contact between CD34+ Hematopoietic Progenitors and CXCL12+ CD271+ Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Benign and Myelodysplastic Bone Marrow
Scientists analyzed putative mesenchymal stromal cell markers and their relationship to CD34+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells within intact human bone marrow in paraffin-embedded bone marrow core biopsies of benign, myelodysplastic syndrome and leukemic marrows using tissue microarrays to facilitate scanning, image analysis and quantitation. [Lab Invest] Abstract

Cilomilast Enhances Osteoblast Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Bone Formation Induced by Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2
Researchers investigated the combined ability of bone morphogenetic protein 2 and cilomilast to enhance the osteoblastic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. [Biochimie] Abstract

Impact of Lenalidomide on the Functional Properties of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Scientists investigated whether lenalidomide alters the functional capacity of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) as the main cellular component of the bone marrow microenvironment. In addition to their growth and differentiation characteristics, they focused on the ability of MSCs to modulate T-cell function and support hematopoietic stem cells. [Exp Hematol] Abstract

Osteogenic Differentiation of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells on the Collagen/Silk Fibroin Bi-Template-Induced Biomimetic Bone Substitutes
These results suggest that the bi-template-induced biomimetic substitutes were able to support the growth and proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Researchers further demonstrated that BMSCs were stimulated to differentiate into the osteoblast cell lineage by evaluating several specific osteogenic markers including staining of alkaline phosphate and calcium nodular and expression of osteogenic genes of osteocalcin and osteonectin. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract

Smad8/BMP2-Engineered Mesenchymal Stem Cells Induce Accelerated Recovery of the Biomechanical Properties of the Achilles Tendon
Researchers evaluated whether implantation of Smad8/BMP2-engineered mesenchymal stem cells in a full-thickness defect of the Achilles tendon would induce regeneration of tissue with improved biomechanical properties. [J Orthop Res] Abstract

Effect of Acellular Dermal Matrix as a Delivery Carrier of Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Bone Regeneration
Investigators evaluated the effect of acellular dermal matrix as a delivery carrier of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells on bone regeneration in athymic murine calvarial bone defect. [J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater] Abstract

    SCIENCE NEWS

The Myelin Repair Foundation Achieves Phase I Myelin Repair Clinical Trial
The Myelin Repair Foundation announced the achievement of a myelin repair Phase I clinical trial for multiple sclerosis earlier than the foundation’s goal set for 2014. This Phase I clinical trial conducted at Cleveland Clinic will examine the efficacy of a new myelin repair therapeutic pathway with mesenchymal stem cells. [Myelin Repair Foundation] Press Release

    INDUSTRY NEWS

Osiris Receives Second Approval for Life-Saving Stem Cell Drug; Prochymal Granted Marketing Consent by New Zealand
Osiris Therapeutics, Inc. announced it has received consent from New Zealand to market its first-in-class stem cell therapy Prochymal® (remestemcel-L), for the treatment of acute graft-vs-host disease in children. With this decision New Zealand joins Canada, which last month became the world’s first internationally recognized regulatory authority to grant approval to a stem cell drug. LSU Researchers Receive $370,000 NIH Grant to Pursue Novel Paradigm in Stem Cell Preservation
Louisiana State University (LSU) researchers received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant of $370,000 to pursue a novel line of research in adipose-derived stem cell cryopreservation. This research focuses on the investigation of new protocols and protein expression states that would help stem cell therapy products such as engineered bone implants survive the freezing process required to store and ship these products. [Louisiana State University] Press Release

New Company Will Commercialize Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Pioneering Research on Microthread Technology
Called VitaThreads LLC, the new company will build on the pioneering research of founders George Pins and Glenn Gaudette. VitaThreads will produce biopolymer threads and sutures for tissue regeneration, wound healing, and cell therapy applications. [Worcester Polytechnic Institute] Press Release
