    TOP STORY
Experimental Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Formation Is Mediated by IL-17 and Attenuated by Mesenchymal Stem Cell Treatment
Results demonstrated that CD4+ T-cell-produced interleukin (IL)-17 plays a critical role in promoting inflammation during abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation and that immunomodulation of IL-17 by mesenchymal stem cells can offer protection against AAA formation. [Circulation] Abstract

Antiarrhythmic Potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Is Modulated by Hypoxic Environment
Researchers found that a hypoxic or normoxic environment surrounding mesenchymal stem cells affects the type and properties of the growth factors or cytokines, and these secreted molecules determine the characteristics of the electro-anatomical substrate of the surrounding myocardium. [J Am Coll Cardiol]

Synergistic Effect of Defined Artificial Extracellular Matrices and Pulsed Electric Fields on Osteogenic Differentiation of Human MSCs
Researchers investigated the synergistic role of defined biochemical and physical microenvironments with respect to osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). [Biomaterials] Abstract

Integration of a Novel Injectable Nano Calcium Sulfate/Alginate Scaffold and BMP2-Gene Modified MSCs for Bone Regeneration
Researchers used the osteoconductive and mechanical properties of nano-scale calcium sulfate (nCS) and the biocompatibility of alginate to develop the injectable nCS/alginate (nCS/A) paste, and characterized the effect of this nCS/A paste loaded with bone morphogenetic protein 2 gene modified rat mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on bone and blood vessel growth. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Optimized Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogel Design and Culture Conditions for Preservation of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Properties
A novel approach that preserved most mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) characteristics was developed using MSC encapsulation in a hydrogel based on hyaluronic acid (HA). An optimized HA-hydrogel composition, whose characteristics were assessed by scanning electron microscopy and viscoelastic property analyses, as well as the more favorable MSC seeding density, was established. [Tissue Eng Part C] Abstract

Polysaccharides Immobilized in Polypyrrole Matrices Are Able to Induce Osteogenic Differentiation in Mouse Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers report that the proper immobilization of heparin and hyaluronic acid into a polypyrrole matrix by electropolymerization results in an optimal interface for mesenchymal stem cell differentiation towards osteoblast lineage. The obtained thin films showed good thermal stability, hydrophilicity and slow controlled polysaccharide release. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Neural Progenitor Cells Derived from Adult Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Promote Neuronal Regeneration
Researchers found that both bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell derived neural progenitor cells (MDNPC) and neural stem/progenitor cells (NS/PC) had similar morphologies and there were no significant differences between MDNPC and NS/PC in promoting PC12 cell proliferation, neurite outgrowth, and dopamine release. [Life Sci] Abstract

Isolation and Characterization of Ovine Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Peripheral Blood
The authors describe for the first time the isolation and characterization of isolation of ovine peripheral blood mesenchymal stem cells. Although some variability was observed between animals, these cells retained their capacity to differentiate into mesenchymal lineages and to transdifferentiate into neuron-like cells in vitro. [BMC Vet ResFull Article

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Combined with an Artificial Dermal Substitute Improve Repair in Full-Thickness Skin Wounds
This study investigated the effect of autologous stem cells on the integration and vascularization of a dermal substitute in full-thickness skin wounds, in a murine model. Two cell populations were compared, whole bone marrow cells and cultivated mesenchymal stem cells, isolated from mice transgenic for the enhanced green fluorescent protein, which allowed tracking of the transplanted cells. [Burns] Abstract

Human Oral Mucosa and Gingiva: A Unique Reservoir for Mesenchymal Stem Cells
This article reviews recent experimental studies on the characterization of a unique population of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human oral mucosa and gingiva, especially their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory functions and their application in the treatment of several in vivo models of inflammatory diseases. [J Dent Res] Abstract

Interplay between Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Lymphocytes: Implications for Immunotherapy and Tissue Regeneration
In this review, the authors discuss current research regarding the immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and the effects of lymphocytes on MSCs. They suggest how these findings could be translated to potential clinical treatment. [J Dent Res] Abstract
