    TOP STORY
An Osteopontin-Integrin Interaction Plays a Critical Role in Directing Adipogenesis and Osteogenesis by Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists revealed that blockade of osteopontin (OPN) function promoted robust adipogenic differentiation, while inhibiting osteogenic differentiation. Re-expression of OPN restored a normal balance between adipogenesis and osteogenesis in OPN-/- mesenchymal stem cells. [Stem Cells] Abstract
New TeSR™-E8™ is Here For Feeder-Free Culture of Human ES Cells and iPS Cells

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
EZH2 and KDM6A Act as an Epigenetic Switch to Regulate Mesenchymal Stem Cell Lineage Specification
Researchers demonstrated that Enhancer of Zeste homology 2 (Ezh2) and lysine demethylase 6A (Kdm6a) transcript levels change during differentiation of multipotential human bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Autophagy Prevents Irradiation Injury and Maintains Stemness through Decreasing ROS Generation in Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers demonstrated that irradiation could induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation that resulted in DNA damage and stemness injury in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Autophagy induced by starvation or rapamycin can reduce ROS accumulation-associated DNA damage and maintain stemness in MSCs. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article

Role of AMP-Activated Protein Kinase in Regulating Hypoxic Survival and Proliferation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from murine bone marrow exclusively expressed the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)α1 catalytic subunit. In contrast to cardiomyocytes, a chronic exposure of MSCs to hypoxia failed to induce cell death despite the absence of AMPK activation. [Cardiovasc Res] Abstract

MicroRNA-141-3p Plays a Role in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Aging by Directly Targeting ZMPSTE24
Researchers showed for the first time that ZMPSTE24, which is involved in the post-translational maturation of lamin A, is largely responsible for the prelamin A accumulation related to cellular senescence in human mesenchymal stem cells. [J Cell Sci] Abstract

Magnetic Layer-by-Layer Coated Particles for Efficient MRI of Dendritic Cells and Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists devised layer-by-layer particles and tested their potential for cell labeling. Flexibility in size and surface charge enabled efficient intracellular delivery of magnetic particles in mesenchymal stem cells and dendritic cells. [Nanomedicine] Abstract

MSC-Seeded Dense Collagen Scaffolds with a Bolus Dose of VEGF Promote Healing of Large Bone Defects
Scientists investigated the potential use of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) in a dense collagen scaffold with a bolus dose of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to repair a defect in the femoral diaphysis of mice. [Eur Cell Mater] Abstract

mRNAs and miRNAs Profiling of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Amniotic Fluid and Skin: The Double Face of the Coin
Scientists report not only the isolation and the traditional characterization of mesenchymal stem cells derived from amniotic fluid and skin but also a molecular characterization based on mRNAs and microRNAs (miRNAs) profiling. [Cell Tissue Res] Abstract

Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells Inhibit C6 Glioma Growth via Secretion of Dickkopf-1 (DKK1)
Researchers demonstrated that human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) inhibited C6 cell growth and modulated the cell cycle to G0/G1 phase. The expression of β-catenin and c-Myc was downregulated in C6 cells by conditioned media from hUC-MSCs, and the levels of secreted DKK1 were positively correlated with concentrations of hUCMSCs-CM. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract

Foxc2 Over-Expression in Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Stimulates Osteogenic Differentiation and Inhibits Adipogenic Differentiation
Researchers investigated the role of forkhead box C2 (Foxc2) overexpression on osteogenic and adipogenic differentiations. The results showed that the mRNA and protein expressions of Foxc2 were stable and high in cells transduced with Foxc2 compared with those transduced with green fluorescent protein. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract

    Cellular Encapsulation Enhances Cardiac Repair
Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) were encapsulated in alginate and attached to the heart with a hydrogel patch in a rat myocardial infarction model. Alginate encapsulation improved retention of hMSCs and facilitated paracrine effects such as increased peri-infarct microvasculature and decreased scar. [J Am Heart Assoc] Abstract | Press Release

    REVIEWS
The Immune Status of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Its Relevance for Therapeutic Application
The analysis of the pre-clinical literature in this review is aimed to gain a better understanding of the therapeutic potential of immune-incompatible mesenchymal stem cells. Emphasis was laid on applications for enhancement of tissue repair in the absence of immune-suppressive therapy. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Paracrine Mechanisms of Proliferative, Anti-Apoptotic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Models of Acute Organ Injury
The purpose of this review is to systematize data from many studies and observations of proliferative, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects of mesenchymal stromal cell paracrine factors and their biologic effects in models of acute organ injury. [Cytotherapy] Abstract
