Transendocardial Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Mononuclear Bone Marrow Cells for Ischemic Cardiomyopathy
Whether culture-expanded mesenchymal stem cells or whole bone marrow mononuclear cells are safe and effective in chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy is controversial. Researchers aimed to demonstrate the safety of transendocardial stem cell injection with autologous mesenchymal stem cells and bone marrow mononuclear cells in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. A Set of MicroRNAs Mediate Direct Conversion of Human Umbilical Cord Lining-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells into Hepatocytes
Scientists aimed to clarify the instructive role of six overexpressed microRNAs (miRNAs) during hepatic differentiation of human umbilical cord lining-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and to test whether overexpression of any of these miRNAs is sufficient to induce differentiation of the hMSCs into hepatocyte-like cells. Hypoxic Mesenchymal Stem Cells Engraft and Ameliorate Limb Ischaemia in Allogeneic Recipients
Researchers demonstrated that hypoxic mesenchymal stem cells have an increased ability to engraft in allogeneic recipients by reducing NK cytotoxicity, and decrease the accumulation of host-derived NK cells when transplanted in vivo. [Cardiovascular Res] Abstract

Silk Fibroin Based Complex Particles with Bioactive Encrustation for BMP-2 Delivery
Pure silk fibroin particles and particles with calcium carbonate encrustation were designed, developed and functionalized by bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2). These were used to deliver the bioactive molecule to mesenchymal stem cells and induce osteogenic differentiation. [Biomacromolecules] Abstract

Allogeneic Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy (Remestemcel-L, Prochymal®) as a Rescue Agent for Severe Refractory Acute GvHD in Pediatric Patients
Investigators evaluated the risk/benefit profile of remestemcel-L, a third party, off-the-shelf source of human mesenchymal stem cells, as a rescue agent for treatment-resistant acute graft versus host disease (GvHD) in pediatric patients. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract | Press Release

Canonical Wnt Signaling Differently Modulates Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Bone Marrow and from Periodontal Ligament under Inflammatory Conditions
Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) exhibit weaker adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation capacities compared to bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs). TNF-α inhibited osteogenic differentiation of PDLSCs more than BMMSCs mainly through regulating canonical Wnt pathway. [Biochim Biophys Acta] Abstract

Allogeneic Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation for Periodontal Regeneration
Researchers investigated the possibility of using local administration of allogeneic bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells to induce tissue regeneration in periodontal defects in a rat model of periodontitis. [J Dent Res] Abstract

Enrichment Isolation of Adipose-Derived Stem/Stromal Cells from the Liquid Portion of Liposuction Aspirates with the Use of an Adherent Column
Investigators evaluated the effectiveness of an adherent column, currently used to isolate mesenchymal stromal cells from bone marrow, to isolate liposuction aspirate fluid cells. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Detection of Spontaneous Tumorigenic Transformation during Culture Expansion of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Mesenchymal stem/stromal cell cultures derived from bone marrow and liver were evaluated for the presence of aberrant cells following long-term expansion. [Exp Biol Med] Abstract

Novel Biologically-Inspired Rosette Nanotube PLLA Scaffolds for Improving Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Chondrogenic Differentiation
Scientists designed a novel tissue engineered nanostructured cartilage scaffold via biologically-inspired self-assembling rosette nanotubes and biocompatible non-woven poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) for enhanced human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell chondrogenic differentiation. [Biomed Mater] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Conditioned Medium Enhances Osteogenic and Chondrogenic Differentiation of Human Embryonic Stem Cells and Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells by Mesodermal Lineage Induction
Scientists hypothesized that treatment of embryoid bodies composed of either human embryonic stem cells or human induced pluripotent stem cells with human mesenchymal stem cells-conditioned medium can stimulate the induction of the mesodermal lineage and subsequent differentiation toward the osteogenic and chondrogenic lineage. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Poly(Epsilon-Lysine) Dendrons Tethered with Phosphoserine Increase Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation Potential of Calcium Phosphate Gels
Cytotoxicity tests on osteoblast-like MG-63 cells as well as morphology and viability studies showed that dendrons induced a significantly higher levels of cell proliferation at early incubation time. Differentiation of the cell was also clearly enhanced at longer incubation time as demonstrated by both alkaline phosphatase activity and expression of typical markers. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Environmentally Responsive Therapeutics for Regenerative Medicine
Unlike pharmaceutical treatments that deliver a single agent at a specific dose, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are site regulated and secrete bioactive factors and signals at variable concentrations in response to local microenvironmental cues. Significant progress has been made in understanding the biochemical and metabolic mechanisms and feedback associated with MSC response. [Exp Mol Med] Full Article
