Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Improve Transplanted Islet Survival and Islet Function in a Syngeneic Mouse Model
Scientists used a syngeneic marginal islet mass transplantation model in a mouse model of diabetes. Glucose homeostasis after the transplantation of syngeneic islets was improved by the co-transplantation of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) together with islets under the kidney capsule and by intravenous infusion of MSCs after intra-hepatic islet transplantation. [Diabetologia] Abstract

Transdifferentiation of Adipogenically Differentiated Cells into Osteogenically or Chondrogenically Differentiated Cells: Phenotype Switching via Dedifferentiation
Mesenchymal stem cells were adipogenically differentiated followed by direct transdifferentiaton, and subsequently examined by histology, immunohistochemistry, qPCR and single cell analysis. Direct cellular conversion of adipogenic lineage cells into osteogenic or chondrogenic resulted in mixed culture of both lineage cells (adipogenic and new acquiring osteogenic/chondrogenic phenotypes). [Int J Biochem Cell Biol] Abstract

Evaluation of an In Vivo Heterotopic Model of Osteogenic Differentiation of Equine Bone Marrow and Muscle Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Fibrin Glue Scaffold
The osteogenic capacity of equine bone marrow and muscle mesenchymal stem cells mixed with fibrin glue or phosphate-buffered saline as a scaffold was assessed. Positive bone formation and mineralization were confirmed in nude mice based on calcium deposition and the presence of osteocalcin and collagen type I. [Cell Tissue Res] Abstract

Intracavernous Delivery of Clonal Mesenchymal Stem Cells Restores Erectile Function in a Mouse Model of Cavernous Nerve Injury
Researchers investigated the effectiveness of mouse clonal bone marrow-derived stem cells obtained from a single colony by using subfractionation culturing method for erectile function in a mouse model of cavernous nerve injury. [J Sex Med] Abstract

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Metabolism during Proliferation and Osteogenic Differentiation under Different Oxygen Tensions
Researchers developed a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry based metabolic profiling approach to analyze the metabolic fate of 13C-glucose in glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle in undifferentiated human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) and hMSC-derived osteoblasts in response to perturbation in oxygen tension. [J Biotechnol] Abstract

Cells Isolated from Human Periapical Cysts Express Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Like Properties
Investigators provide a detailed description of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from human periapical cysts, which they have termed hPCy-MSCs. [Int J Biol Sci] Full Article

Impact of Repeated Intravenous Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Infusion on Myocardial Collagen Network Remodeling in a Rat Model of Doxorubicin-Induced Dilated Cardiomyopathy
Researchers evaluated the effects of repeated peripheral vein injection of mesenchymal stem cells on collagen network remodeling and myocardial TGF-β1, AT1, CYP11B2 gene expressions in a rat model of doxorubicin-induced dilated cardiomyopathy. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract

MicroRNA-23a Is Involved in Tumor Necrosis Factor-α Induced Apoptosis in Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Myocardial Infarction
Using a tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced bone marrow (BM)-mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) injury model in vitro and a rat myocardial infarction (MI) model in vivo, researchers showed that microRNA (miR)-23a was involved in TNF-α-induced BM-MSC apoptosis through regulating caspase-7 and that the injection of BM-MSCs overexpressing miR-23a could improve left ventricular function and reduce infarct size in the rat MI model. [Exp Mol Pathol] Full Article

Differentiation of Human-Adipose Derived Stem Cells into Neuron-Like Cells which Are Compatible with Photocurable Three-Dimensional Scaffolds
A group of elastic-dominant, porous bioscaffolds from photocurable chitosan and gelatin were fabricated and proven to be bio-compatible with both human adipose-derived stromal/stem cells (hADSCs) and hADSC-derived neuron-like cells in vitro. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

The Effect of Sterilization Methods on Electronspun Poly(Lactide-Co-Glycolide) and Subsequent Adhesion Efficiency of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists investigated the effect of sterilization by ethanol, ultraviolet radiation or antimicrobial solution on poly(lactide-co-glycolide) scaffolds produced by the electrospinning technique. The properties of nanofibers and the cellular adhesion of mesenchymal stem cells to the scaffolds were analyzed after the treatments. [J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater] Abstract

Long-Term Neuroprotective Effects of NT-4-Engineered Mesenchymal Stem Cells Injected Intravitreally in a Mouse Model of Acute Retinal Injury
Researchers sought to graft genetically engineered mesenchymal stem cells that continuously produce neurotrophin-4 into the murine eye after the onset of acute retinal injury. [Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells to Promote Kidney Transplantation Tolerance
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have a great potential as a tolerance-promoting cell therapy. Extensive investigations are still needed to dissect the mechanism(s) of action of MSC, particularly in the setting of a proinflammatory environment, and to establish specific assays for monitoring MSC-treated patients to define the protolerogenic potential of MSC-based therapy in kidney transplantation. [Curr Opin Organ Transplant] Abstract
