    TOP STORY
Design Considerations of Iron-Based Nanoclusters for Noninvasive Tracking of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Homing
Scientists report a serendipitous finding that various iron-based magnetic nanoparticles actively augment chemokine receptor CXCR4 expression of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [ACS Nano] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Additional Benefit of Combined Therapy with Melatonin and Apoptotic Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells against Sepsis-Induced Kidney Injury
Researchers tested whether combined therapy with melatonin and apoptotic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells offered additional benefit in ameliorating sepsis-induced acute kidney injury. [J Pineal Res] Abstract

Substrate Topography Determines the Fate of Chondrogenesis from Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Resulting in Specific Cartilage Phenotype Formation
The effects of chondroitin sulfate-coated nano-topographies on cell characteristics and chondrogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) were investigated. Scientists showed that various nano-topographical patterns triggered changes in MSC morphology and cytoskeletal structure, affecting cell aggregation and differentiation. [Nanomedicine] Abstract

Advanced Glycation End Product 3 (AGE3) Suppresses the Mineralization of Mouse Stromal ST2 Cells and Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Increasing TGF-ß Expression and Secretion
Scientists examined the roles of transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß in the AGE-induced suppression of mineralization of ST2 cells and human mesenchymal stem cells. AGE3 significantly inhibited mineralization in both cell types, whereas transfection with siRNA for the receptor for AGEs significantly recovered this process in ST2 cells. [Endocrinology] Abstract

Donor-Matched Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Knee Infrapatellar and Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue of Osteoarthritic Donors Display Differential Chondrogenic and Osteogenic Commitment
Researchers performed a donor-matched comparison between infrapatellar fat pad mesenchymal stem cells and knee subcutaneous adipose tissue stem cells, as appealing candidates for cell-based therapies that are easily accessible during surgery. [Eur Cell Mater] Abstract | Full Article

Enhanced Chondrogenic Differentiation of Dental Pulp Stem Cells Using Nanopatterned PEG-GelMA-HA Hydrogels
Researchers demonstrated that dental pulp stem cells formed three-dimensional spheroids, which provide an appropriate environment for in vitro chondrogenic differentiation. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Distal-Less Homeobox 2 Promotes the Osteogenic Differentiation Potential of Stem Cells from Apical Papilla
Scientists investigated distal-less homeobox 2 (DLX2) function in stem cells from apical papilla (SCAPs). They found that, in vitro, DLX2 expression was up-regulated in SCAPs by adding BMP4 and by inducing osteogenesis. [Cell Tissue Res] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Reduce Cigarette Smoke-Induced Inflammation and Airflow Obstruction in Rats via TGF-ß1 Signaling
Researchers tested the effects of rat mesenchymal stem cells (rMSCs) on inflammation of the lungs and destructive pulmonary function induced by cigarette smoke in rats. rMSCs were cultured in vitro and infused intratracheally into cigarette smoke-exposed rats. [COPD] Abstract

Co-Culture with Human Synovium-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Inhibits Inflammatory Activity and Increases Cell Proliferation of Sodium Nitroprusside-Stimulated Chondrocytes
Researchers examined the inhibitory effects on inflammatory activity from a co-culture of human synovium-derived mesenchymal stem cells and sodium nitroprusside-stimulated chondrocytes. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Crosstalk between Adrenergic and Toll-Like Receptors in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Keratinocytes: A Recipe for Impaired Wound Healing
Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells exposed to epinephrine significantly increased Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) message, TLR2 protein, and myeloid differentiation factor 88. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

LRP6 in Mesenchymal Stem Cells Is Required for Bone Formation during Bone Growth and Bone Remodeling
Researchers generated mice lacking lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6) expression specifically in nestin+ mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by crossing nestin-Cre mice with LRP6flox mice and investigated the functional changes of bone marrow MSCs and skeletal alterations. SCIENCE NEWS
    Cartilage, Made to Order
In a step toward reducing the heavy toll of osteoarthritis around the world, scientists have created the first example of living human cartilage grown on a laboratory chip. The researchers ultimately aim to use their 3-D printing approach to create replacement cartilage for patients with osteoarthritis or soldiers with battlefield injuries. INDUSTRY NEWS
Adult Stem Cell Research Shows Promise
Scientists sporting white coats and safety gloves are working in a bright Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lab on an incredible project. They are part of FDA’s MSC Consortium, a large team of FDA scientists studying adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-cells that could eventually be used to repair, replace, restore or regenerate cells in the body, including those needed for heart and bone repair.
