miR-543 and miR-590-3p Regulate Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Aging via Direct Targeting of AIMP3/p18
Scientists report a novel role of aminoacyl-tRNAsynthetase-interacting multifunctional protein-3 (AIMP3)/p18 in the cellular aging of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). They found that AIMP3/p18 expression significantly increased in senescent hMSCs and in aged mouse bone marrow-derived MSCs. [Age] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Possess Different Biological Characteristics but Do Not Change Their Therapeutic Potential when Cultured in Serum Free Medium
Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) were cultured in a chemical defined serum free medium. Growth, multipotency, surface antigen expression, telomerase, immunosuppressive ability, gene expression profile and genomic stability of hUC-MSCs cultured in serum free medium and serum-containing medium were analyzed and compared side by side. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Abstract | Full Article

Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Enhance the Immunomodulatory Function of CD8+CD28− Regulatory T Cells
Researchers studied the effects of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) on CD8+CD28− regulatory T cells and found that the MSCs could not only increase the proportion of CD8+CD28− T cells, but also enhance CD8+CD28−T cells’ ability of hampering naive CD4+ T-cell proliferation and activation, decreasing the production of IFN-γ by activated CD4+ T cells and inducing the apoptosis of activated CD4+ T cells. [Cell Mol Immunol] Full Article

Differential Expression of Basal MicroRNAs’ Patterns in Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells
Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) were characterized in terms of their proliferation and differentiation capacity. Scientists observed 19 up-regulated microRNAs (miRNAs) and 29 significantly down-regulated miRNAs in DPSCs in comparison with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. [J Cell Mol Med] Full Article

In Vitro Cell Motility as a Potential Mesenchymal Stem Cell Marker for Multipotency
Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells from various donors and in vitro passages were evaluated for their in vitro motility, and the distances were correlated to the adipogenic, chondrogenic, and osteogenic differentiation potentials and the levels of senescence and cell size. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Promote Liver Regeneration and Prolong Survival in Small-For-Size Liver Grafts: Involvement of C-Jun N-Terminal Kinase, Cyclin D1, and NF-κB
Researchers explored whether and how mesenchymal stem cells protected hepatocytes and stimulated allograft regeneration in small-for-size liver transplantation. [PLoS One] Full Article

Local Delivery of Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Poly-Lactic-Co-Glycolic Acid Nano-Fiber Scaffold Suppress Arthritis in Rats
Mesenchymal stem cells seeded on nano-fiber scaffold suppressed arthritis and bone destruction due to inhibition of systemic inflammatory reaction and immune response by suppressing T cell proliferation and reducing anti- type II collagen antibody production. [PLoS One] Full Article

In Vitro Mutual Interaction between Tenocytes and Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Scientists evaluated the in vitro mutual interaction of adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells and tenocytes in standard culture conditions and a microwound healing model. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Randomized, Double-Blind, Phase I/II Study of Intravenous Allogeneic Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Acute Myocardial Infarction
A Phase I/II randomized, double-blind, single-dose study was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of intravenous administration of Stempeucel versus placebo. Twenty patients who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention for acute myocardial infarction were randomly assigned to receive intravenous Stempeucel or placebo and were followed for two years. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Co(II)-Mediated Effects of Plain and Plasma Immersion Ion Implanted Cobalt-Chromium Alloys on the Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Cobalt-chromium alloy modified by nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation was evaluated with regard to its effect on the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. [J Orthop Res] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Spheroids Exhibit Enhanced In Vitro and In Vivo Osteoregenerative Potential
Investigators assessed whether the osteoregenerative potential of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) spheroids is greater than that of monolayer MSCs. [BMC Biotechnol] Abstract | Full Article
