    TOP STORY
Hypoxic Preconditioning of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Induces Metabolic Changes, Enhances Survival and Promotes Cell Retention In Vivo
Hypoxic pre-conditioned mesenchymal stromal cells (HP-MSCs) showed enhanced survival in vivo after intramuscular injection into immune deficient NOD/SCID-IL2Rgamma-/- mice. Interestingly, HP-MSCs consume glucose and secrete lactate at a slower rate than controls, possibly promoting cell survival, as glucose remains available to the cells for longer periods of time. [Stem Cells] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Adipogenic Differentiation of hMSCs Is Mediated by Recruitment of IGF-1R onto the Primary Cilium Associated with Cilia Elongation
Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) expressed primary cilia which were labelled with acetylated alpha tubulin and visualized by confocal microscopy. Chemically induced differentiation resulted in lineage specific changes in cilia length and prevalence independent of cell cycle. [Stem Cells] Abstract

TGFβ3 Secretion by Three-Dimensional Cultures of Human Dental Apical Papilla Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists hypothesized that human dental apical papilla-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hSCAPs) can produce and secrete TGFβ3 in response to micro-environmental cues. For this, they encapsulated hSCAPs in different types of matrix and evaluated TGFβ3 secretion. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Influence of Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) Pre-Implantation Differentiation Approach on Periodontal Regeneration In Vivo
The implantation of bone marrow-derived MSCs has previously been shown successful to achieve periodontal regeneration. However, the preferred pre-implantation differentiation strategy to obtain optimal periodontal regeneration is still unknown. Researchers explored which differentiation approach is most suitable for periodontal regeneration. [J Clin Periodontol] Abstract

Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells in 3-D Zr-Si Organic-Inorganic Scaffolds Produced by Two-Photon Polymerization Technique
Zr-Si scaffolds with 150, 200, and 250 μm pore sizes were seeded with human bone marrow stem cells (hBMSCs) and human adipose tissue derived stem cells (hASCs) and cultured in osteoinductive and control media for three weeks. Osteogenic differentiation of hASCs and hBMSCs and formation of bone matrix was comparatively analyzed via alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium quantification, osteocalcin staining and scanning electron microscopy. [PLoS One] Full Article

The Osteogenic Priming of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Is Impaired in Experimental Diabetes
Scientists evaluated the functionality and osteogenic priming capability of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells, harvested from animals with experimental diabetes, and grown in the absence of any given differentiation factor. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Improved Survival of Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor
Scientists examined the protective effect of macrophage migration inhibitory factor on hypoxia/serum deprivation-induced apoptosis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), as well as the possible mechanisms. MSCs were obtained from rat bone marrow and cultured in vitro. [Mol Cell Biochem] Full Article

Enhanced Survival of Mice Infused with Bone Marrow-Derived as Compared to Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Mesenchymal stem cells constitute a promising cell source for regenerative therapy and are frequently isolated from bone marrow or adipose tissue. Scientists assessed the characteristics of these two cell types and their safety for cell infusion. [Hepatol Res] Abstract

Hypoxia-Induced Proliferation in Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Angiotensin II-Mediated PI3K/AKT Pathway
Researchers determined angiotensin II mechanisms and PI3K/AKT pathway in hypoxia-induced proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Hypoxia induced cellular proliferation in mouse MSCs and upregulated endogenous angiotensin II and angiotensin-converting enzyme in the cell culture and expression of AT1 receptors. [Cell Biochem Funct] Abstract

    INDUSTRY NEWS
Stem Cell ‘Tool’ Grants Given to Five Researchers
Five Stanford researchers were awarded grants of between $1 million and $2 million each by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine at its most recent board meeting. The awards were given through the agency’s “tools and technology” grant program, which encourages researchers to develop new methods and techniques to overcome stumbling blocks in the field.
